    kubuntu 14.04 does not boot

Lenovo z50, 8 GB RAM 1 TB HDD

Installed are w8.1 and a few smaller appliactions, which came along with the machine. No data yet stored on this machine. I opened a bit less then 600 GB for an kubuntu installation.

I changed the setting in BIOS to support legacy systems to allow booting from a USB stick.

I prepare a USB stick with YUMI to boot kubuntu. After booting from the stick I want to install kubuntu.

Booting starts from the stick, but after about 5-10 min a text screen appears with about 20 lines of text. The last 2 lines are:
    [ 123.372134] Kernel Offset: 0x0 from 0xfffffffff81000000 (relocated range: 0xffffffff80000000-0xffffffffbfffffff)
[ 132.372168] drm_kms_helper: panic mode occured; switching back to text console

Additionally the LED in CAPS key blinkes.

    What did I make wrong?

What kind I do to get kubuntu booting to install it thereafter?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The flashing CAPS LED means a kernel panic, same as the text message.

To clarify - you haven't started installing yet, this crash occurs while booting the Live USB?

A few lines more from before that last error might help.

Is this a 64-bit processor and a 64-bit Live USB image?
I'd rather be locked out than locked in.

Thanks for your reply. Your reply helped me to understand the situation already a bit better.

I cannot give more text displayed as the text is gone. Should it happen again, I will get as much as possible.

Problem happens during booting from the USB stick. Booting never completed, thus installation was not yet started.

64 bit machine and 64 bit version of kubuntu.

I found in the meantime the information that if the USB stick is only USB2.0 it cannot be used on a USB3.0 connector for installation of ubuntu versions. I am pretty sure that the USB2 stick was in the USB3 connector when the problem happened.

I will now try to make a live USB stick using the Rufus tool http://rufus.akeo.ie/ and taking care of the USB2. stick being placed in the USB2 connector.

        Thanks for all helpful comments.

I oberserved following problems and list them here including countermeasures:

        - I used an USB2 live stick in a USB3 connector. This does not allow booting from the stick. => make sure the USB version match
        - There was an reading problem at the USB live stick => change the stick.

Considering both things mentioned the installation went without any problem.
