Virtualbox - Enable usb 2.0 EHCI Controller error ?

Hello,

Installed xp on virtualbox and the guest additions extension pack .

Can run most things except 3d acceleration and usb.

It is the usb that is needed the most as i constantly burn images to pen drive.

Update :

There`s a guest additions pack plus an extension pack - which one ?

Both boxes ticked under usb devices and still no usb recognized ?

Help needed and thank you again.

Damn, don`t know why usb isnot detected.

What version of Virtualbox (and where installed from)? And what extension pack version?

Guest additions is provided by the base (free, open) virtualbox package. But you have to explicitly install it in each vm guest, as I'm sure you know.

The extension pack is a separate thing (not open, free only for personal use) that you have to install on the host. Yes, this is what provides USB support.

If you've done both, and rebooted both the guest and the host, and it's still not working ... gonna need more details.

You have lost me on Guest additions ? I thought the extension pack and guest pack were the same thing.

PS : Having exactly the same problem with Win 7 guest . No idea were to start on that.

Another thing is on those Youtube tutorials - all tutorials for that matter say goto : Devices > install guest additions .

Now why don`t i have `install guest additions`

I have `insert guest additions cd......` i click on this and nothing happens , so there must be something missing.

What is your host OS? 13.04 Raring Ringtail? If not you have the wrong build of virtualbox.
Also is it a 32 bit install?

Oracle hasn't changed the name since Raring. No idea why.

From the downloads page:

Fogot about that , using Trusty 14.04.1 and ( i think ) on a 32 bit os.

OK, sorry about that, I hadn't noticed that!

When you click 'install guest additions' all that happens is that vbox virtually inserts a virtual cdrom into the virtual cd drive. It can't force the guest to do anything (... because there is no guest additions code yet for it to talk to!). So what happens next depends on the guest. Windows tends to auto-run anything it finds (hence viruses); with Linux I'm not clear what the defaults are but I think the most that will happen is that the removable media icon should appear in the system tray. Open this and you should see the (virtual) CD and you can install the guest additions by launching the autorun.sh or whatever it's called.

That's about right, some details may be different.

l´m sorry but there´s no icon indicating guest install .

This should be less ambigous to install .

I did get usb to install , infact burnt an iso image onto usb using vb- but i am pretty sure that was an act of god.......

Sorry again. The guest is XP isn't it. I was thinking Kubuntu guest.

After clicking install guest additions in the host virtualbox menu, open windows explorer in the guest. After some number of seconds a CD icon / object should appear; double-click it. (I may be confused again ... this is thinking back to the last time I used XP.)

I need to do this myself sometime soon.

Solved the problem with an update and guest additions are working fine.

A tip to anyone , just keep os upto date.

This has also cased another problem though.

Will try and solve , if not another post to go....
