check that it has space to create the files on initial log in

you can use df -h to check space on partitions.

is /media/hd/home mounted as /home?

Hi sithlord48,

I am so confused at this point - really don`t know what`s going on here.

As far as i can tell /home does not exist as such as bm2lts has partitions the drive .

I just noticed , looking at fstab sda1 is commented out . If line is commented out , i think it means that it`s not operational. Logic is saying that if you uncomment (remove hash) , the line will become functional.

Is this the case ? or am just beginning to see a cyber mirage .

The error on booting into kde is back :

Call to lnusertemp failed (temporary directories full?). Check your installation

This is the same system and issue as your other thread [System] Why did os make sda1 partition read-only ?, yes?

I still suspect permissions errors.

The temp areas have the sticky bit (t) and the directories all the 'x' so they can be traversed ... nothing wrong there.
The odd thing is using a symlink for /home/reel -> /media/hd/home/reel ... I've never seen that, but it must be the way this distro is set up.
The fact that /home is owned by yourself, not root, is unusual, and the fact that /home/reel is owned by root is wrong except that the link target is OK.

I would be tempted to try

sudo chown reel:reel /home/reel

but I don't really think this is the cause of the problem.

If it doesn't work I think you have a distro-specific issue not one that Kubuntu/Ubuntu/KDE people can help with ...

I have a confession to make , in despair at not being able to use kde , i made a fresh install of Ubuntu Trusty 14.04.1 . I picked xfce , as this seems close to kde .

Using xfce right now and i did try to install kubuntu-desktop via synaptic but the error is there ( broken package i.e. kubuntu-desktop ).

The readout is there from xfce . Does this matter ? I can tell you off bat that i`m getting fed up.......no aggravated is more close at the moment.

Should i have another whack at it , or just let things be ?

that only says that you are using some special distro based on ubuntu. so did you install stock ubuntu or the same distro>?

@sithlord48, installed bm2lts , which is the modified Trusty 14.04.01 Ubuntu.

Does bm2lts have a KDE version? If not, then it isn't a modified version of Kubuntu or a set of packages that can be installed on top of Kubuntu and you need to ask 'them' not 'us'.

Or at least get a detailed list of the modifications that distro provides and paste this information here.

I mean, for all I know it could be Windows. "Modifications are as follows: install Trusty 14.04.01 Ubuntu. Buy a copy of Windows. Install Windows on the same drive replacing Ubuntu."
