How do you install KDE ?

    Hello,

I looked through the posts here , particularly this post :

    https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showth...0kde%20desktop

However, didn`t get the KDE Desktop though.

The login screen gives me Gnome , Kodi but no KDE. Have only used kde for ever and so using Gnome is a real , real .......real pain , as functionality is zero.

Ok, so this is what i have done so far :

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
This gives so many dependency errors though :

    Code:
    reel@BM2LTSR66RBin:/media/hd/home/reel$ sudo apt-get update
    [sudo] password for reel:
    Sorry, try again.

Did you install gpgv and try again?
    Code:
    sudo apt install gpgv

      Hi anika200,

Seems that gpgv is already installed and the latest version.

Tried the sudo apt-get update and the same gpg errors.

Did you manually add a launchpad or ppa or source? Check that all your sources are correct.

          Tried to download this :

          sudo add-apt-repository ppa:neon/kf5

          but got this :

          Code:
          reel@BM2LTSR66RBin:/media/hd/home/reel$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:neon/kf5
          Cannot add PPA: 'ppa:neon/kf5'.
Please check that the PPA name or format is correct.

I don`t seem to have any sources or i can`t find them. Also don`t know how to make a copy of the screen to show better.

Yeah, I have no idea what you are getting into there with that ppa.
Anyway, there are clear instructions for adding the ppa on the ppa page. Click the green text on the web page as pictured below and have fun.

I`m sorry anika200, i am seriously out of depth here - no idea on what`s happening here.

All i want is for Gnome and Kodi to disappear and just have KDE alive and kicking.

              Code:
              reel@BM2LTSR66RBin:/media/hd/home/reel$ sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Can you post the result of your sources list please?
                Code:
                sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
Edit: Also what version of KDE are you wanting? Is it the current version in your version of (k)ubuntu, or the latest stable version or Plasma5?

You could try re-installing your keyring
                  Code:
                  sudo [FONT=Consolas]apt-get install --reinstall [/FONT]ubuntu-keyring
I am out of ideas after this one.

PS : On a fresh install of a modified version of Ubuntu 14.04 called BM2LTS which is specially built for the htpc i`m running.
there you go, you are using something that seems to be highly modified from a normal Ubuntu. I cannot tell what is modified, what specific sort of hardware it is designed for (arm? Intel?)
If it was built specifically for a particular device, it may be modified so much that it may not be feasible to install another Desktop environment on it.

I can't tell anything useful from their website, to be honest I cannot definitively determine what this distro is actually used for.

And then you add a ppa that no longer exists, which may confuse things even more.

Please do as asked and paste the content of your /etc/apt/sources.list and tell us of any ppa you may have installed.
I have seen the gpgv error once a long time back, it was due to a typo in the sources.list file, so it is worth checking.

It is also important to note to us what you are actually running for an OS - when you say 14.04, we would assume Kubuntu, and possibly Ubuntu, and not a stripped down/heavily customized niche distro that isn't even listed on Distrowatch.

                      @claydoh,

                      Code:
[B]I cannot definitively determine what this distro is actually used for.
                      [/B]
The distro in question named BM2LTS is running standard (ubuntu) ,they seemed to have changed from Kubuntu .

It ( the distro ) is designed to make an htpc - in this case called Reelbox Avantegarde to run as a pc and set top box , jointly. Works very well, until a few years back the company, `Reel Multimedia` went out of business . The distro closed on Lucid 10.04, which is what i have been using until now.

A month or 2 ago i switched to an upgraded Reelbox distro of Precise 12.04.5 - which i am using on another drive - ( this is not BM2LTS ).

The same forum called `Reelbox4you` started work on a similar distro to that of the original Reelbox a couple of years back. No doubt they knew that Reel Multimedia was going bankrupt.

Enter BM2LTS , the version is now running (ubuntu 14.04) .

On a side note BM2LTS can run on any pc, hybrid or not.

I really hope this information helps .

                      Thanks.

From what I gather this distro is designed to be a glorified video recorder according to the web site http://www.vdr-portal.de/board16-vid...c5/index3.html and the wiki http://www.vdr-wiki.de/wiki/index.php/Hauptseite and it uses the XBMC. If you really want to use KDE it would be a lot easier to install Kubuntu then install XBMC.

Installing Kubuntu as is would nullify the tv part which has the dvb tuners - which i don`t want. I use this machine as a tv as well.

There seems to be a broken package in Synaptic which is preventing the install of KDE.

If i knew which package , it would be less difficult.

The exact same question on `askubuntu` is being put forward :

                            http://askubuntu.com/questions/50504...roken-packages

The only difference is Kubuntu instead of Ubuntu.

lets go back to the basics here:

                              run
                              sudo apt-get update

                              and
                              sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

We need to make sure that your package database is up to date, and the 120 upgradeable packages are installed (in your other thread, it was showing 15 packages not upgraded, so it is likely we are doing too many different things at once here, more of a confusion issue than a real problem)

                              Post any errors you get.

Dist-upgrade will show info as to what will be installed, removed, and what will not be installed (if any) These not-installed packages are the ones that we will focus on, as well as any errors you may get.
