Yes, I would think that it would be easier to install the VDR/dvb/kodi stuff on an existing linux setup

This distro also seems to use clonezilla for the installer , and I can't see what modifications may have been done. It is a 3 and a half gig download via bittorrent, with only oine or 2 seeders, so the download time for me was almost 9 hours, lol!

Type man apt-get and read the difference between upgrade and dist-upgrade.

          Code:

Ok, though you must have updated your system beforehand already, as the 120 upgradeable packages are now zero . So far it looks fine.

            Now try installing kubuntu-desktop
            sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

This is where we find if there still is a problem. The output will show us where to go next.
There will be a large number of packages to grab to get a kde desktop, btw.

There is something strange about this particular distrobution your using. I think it is clear that it is not a proper Ubuntu system but a bastardised* Ubuntu. Possibly developed to prevent the end user from replacing certain packages (apps). The package kubuntu-desktop is a meta package on an Ubuntu system that should pull in all plasma packages that are used on a Kubuntu system, the fact that your system is not doing this may suggest that it is blocking those packages.

As it does not appear to like kubuntu-desktop have you tried to install the packages one by one?
                Code:
                sudo apt-get install kde-workspace plasma-desktop
Also can you tell us what GUI package manager this distro uses? Can you attempt to install KDE from that graphical package manager instead of at the command line?

                * bastardised
adj 1: deriving from more than one source or style [syn:
                bastardized, bastardised]

Looks like i may have gone a touch too far . It seems this morning the forum for some reason was blocking me, or maybe Kubuntu Forums was off line.

Whatever the cause i went ahead in the install of nvidia drivers for the gt210 graphic card. This card is the pc part of the htpc ( Reelbox ) , as it`s called.

The other part runs on Radeon ( AMD ) , which belongs to tv ,satellite and cable.

Well, it turns out that when installing the proprietary driver ( 331.117 ) , the os just went straight back to the nouveau driver . In other words the system would not let me configure.

So, went into etc/X11 and deleted all files starting with `xorg.conf`. Did this on the other install of 10.04 and 12.04 to get audio working.

This time i didn`t replace the etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf with a modified version. Then , have to do the same thing in etc/asound.conf. The end result being that i can not enter desktop and so need to reinstall BM2LTS.

Luckily have 12.04.5 on another drive which is how we are communicating. See if tomorrow brings inspiration .

Reinstalled BM2LTS this morning . First thing i did was try to install that package :

                    Code:
                    sudo apt-get install kde-workspace plasma-desktop
                    However, same results :

                    Code:
                    reel@BM2LTSR66RBin:/media/hd/home/reel$ sudo apt-get install kde-workspace plasma-desktop
                    [sudo] password for reel:

Right this distro uses Ubuntu Software Centre. In that case try using that to install plasma desktop (KDE), does it allow you to?

In one of your ealier comments you highlighted that as well as using the Ubuntu repository your also using PPA's. It maybe that the versions of packages in the Ubuntu repository and the ppa's are out of sync, that when your trying to install plasma desktop from Ubuntu that packages in the ppa are not compatible.

The same problem arises when i try to install `muon package manager`. Get broken packages error.

@NickStone, yes i have used ( am using ) that but prefer Synaptic which have now installed and seems fine barring the broken packages issue.

In both Synaptic and Ubuntu package managers kubuntu-desktop will not install because of post 21 , which has all those un met dependancies.

Installed BM2LTS fresh this morning and no ppa`s were downloaded.

                          Try
                          sudo apt-get -f install

This tries to install missing packages, which the "...but it is not going to be installed" messages you see indicate.
There us some weird dependency issue going on here, Ubuntu users add KDE or Kubuntu to their Unity every day with no problems.

Now, which packages(s) to install to get you KDE or Kubuntu is also something else to consider

kde-plasma-desktop installs a bare, base KDE desktop and not much else
kde-standard will give you a basic KDE desktop with some things such as a file manager, etc
kubuntu-desktop pulls in everything that makes up a default Kubuntu install, including Muon
kde-full pulls in the kitchen sink of KDE, but does not install anything kubuntu-specific, such as muon

kubuntu-desktop is the safest bet, but pulls in a lot more. The meta-packages listed above are in order of how many things they pull in.

Run the command at the top first, and we will hopefully fix the problem you have, or narrow it down better.

I do not know how I missed this earlier, but the above sources.list is not a stock ubuntu one. Does your current fresh install have the file contents exactly like this? There are normally a lot of comments in the file describing some things. I does look OK content wise, but I could be missing something.

The difference in the sources lists might well be that in `Repositories` i selected everything ; however, finding that the situation with kubuntu-desktop remained the same , unchecked `source code` , `Pre-released upgrades (trusty proposed)` and `unsupported updates (trusty-backports).

Try changing the server you have designated for downloading. From your listing you are using a server in Germany. Change it to Server for United States or Main Server.
