Distilled "what's the point with activities and widgets" KDE

    LOL
Being that I LURCH from using the computer a LOT and then not so much and using the smart phone, I ......muse on.....the whole "KDE thing" and......the "widgets" and "activities" and such.

I have wended my way here through the whole Compiz cube thing......It REVOLUTIONIZED how I worked with teaching an online biology class almost a decade ago......while other teachers were "squinty eyed" at looking at submitted documents, online exams etc.

i "flipped the cube face" and had my answer sheet below their document ( semi-transparent) etc. copy and pasted to another cube face and whizzed their critiqued response back in A FEW MINUTES........ while the other profs were complaining and moaning and groaning and generally DETESTED by the students.

Now......I have gone to "KDE activities and widgets".....

    Basically......... here is the distillation.

Think of "doing stuff on the computer where:

    a) you have to go to kicker/menu........... activites are a button on the panel......done........end of story.....each activity customized to the things that you normally click through endless....ummm clicks.....

    b) widgets........I USUALLY use the "folder" view........each activity has a folder view customized to what I am using in that activity.

    i) there is also an Amarok activity.......It has Amarok open and ready on it........along with a nice wallpaper.....
ii) there is also a "page for school links"...... I use the "rocket launcher" and just drag the two important web links into it...one for the "Blackboard part of the college site" and one for "Pinnacle gradebook".
iii) Writing for my e-books........ an activity and folder for only the e-books.
iv) Apps for the college...... I am developing activities for a motion detector and a LUX meter.... I have links to the apps on the activity and a folder for the docs...
    v) there is a local weather activity and also a weather widget for where I will, hopefully, soon be diving with disabled people.

Really instead of "clicking the file box"......... or going through the menu......

Make an activty and populate it with widgets........really........

    if anyone desires particulars....just ask.

I've had similar set-ups but noticed that some things have changed.
When I used 14.04 an activity opened with programmes as previously left. More usefully, on stopping the activity progs were also stopped (only using KDE stuff).

However now I'm on 14.10 this no longer happens. Stop the activity, then check processes and there are my KDE progs still running. So now I'm cautious about using activities in case I unintentionally have multiples of the same prog loaded.

Maybe things will change in 15.04?

I have a screen dim and shut off enabled on my laptop. When viewing a lengthy video I pop into another activity (Videos) where I disabled the power saving features. One click rather than wading through menu items to turn them off. When done pop back to main activity where they are enabled.
Linux because it works. No social or political motives in my decision to use it.
