Kwallet only exists when you log in to the desktop therefore it is not available on boot up. That said, it only starts within the desktop when you run a programme that uses kwallet to auto-enter login details when it asks for a password before proceeding.
Any KDE programme that uses passwords eg Kmail, Konqueror etc.
However like me you use Firefox so Kwallet is redundant there, although I believe there is (was) an addon that got FF to use Kwallet if that was your preference.
So my Kwallet has one pwd for my Kmail login. If I left it logged in continuously I probably wouldn't bother with Kw at all.
