Can't view pdf files in firefox

I am having trouble viewing pdf files in firefox. I can download them and view them using kpdf, but I can't seem to view them as a separate tab in the browser. I used Automatix to download and install firefox and the pdf reader (I think it's just called acrobat reader). I tried uninstalling and re-installing, to no effect. I am running the latest version of Dapper. Any help would be greatly appreciated (please be gentle, I am a newbie and have no idea what I'm doing). Please let me know if I can provide any more information.
    Many thanks.

You could see if the plugin is actually installed by opening up a blank page/tab in FF and typing in:

    aboutlugins

That will list all of the installed plugins.

    -m
