How do I rip a DVD that I own and copy to USB?

    Kubuntu 14.04

I installed dvd::rip and the ap could not locate the DVD. I applied the following code:
sudo ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd. My next attempt got a long error message as follows:

    An internal exception was thrown!
    The error message was:

    can't write /media/steven/STARGATE_SG1/VIDEO_TS/unnamed.rip at /usr/share/perl5/Video/DVDRip/Project.pm line 158.
    Video:VDRip::Project::save('Video:VDRip::Project=HASH(0x3f3aba0)') called at /usr/share/perl5/Video/DVDRip/GUI/Main.pm line 674

I haven't tried to copy a DVD in a long time, and can't remember how to fix the problems, or even to properly fill out the Rip form.

I have a series called Stargate SG1 that some of the DVD's no longer play. I want to preserve the series on USB if possible.

    Thanks for any help

      Hi Vinny,

No, but when I open Dolphin, the column on the left side of the screen says the DVD is recognized. When I attempt to open the DVD to read the content, for instance the VOB files, the page is blank.

Vinny, I want to make sure you don't think I am pirating the movies. I like science fiction and purchased the complete SG1 series and the Atlantis series too, and now, when sufficient time has lapsed to once again replay them, I can not view them anymore. I am able to watch programs like Netflix and Hulu, though. Good to hear from you, my friend.

        Hi again,

After you answered my other post, and after installing libdvdcss4, the option does drop down from panel, which is on the top of my monitor. When I select the K3b option, K3b Crashes. Details as follows:

Executable: k3b PID: 4954 Signal: Segmentation fault (11) Time: 11/23/14 04:50:13 AM. I reported the bug, but response indicated the information was not helpful.

I really like my science fiction library, and enjoy playing it every several months. I have attempted and succeeded copying a movie to USB in the past and had a wonderful success, but it has been so long ago that I cannot remember how the ripping process was handled. I don't remember having the same problems then.

In recent times, some of the series I own on DVD have stopped being recognized. I am attempting to copy the two Stargate series to USB, where I believe they will remain more stable (no chance of scratching them), but I have to copy them to a computer file first. My thinking about Ripping them to remove the CSS feature was to have them continue to be replayable, even if some day the libdvdcss2 package is removed permanently. I do not believe this is wrong, because I did purchase my collections. Do you have an opinion on the matter?

Do you know of a way to repair the DVDs that have stopped being recognized? There are a couple DVD's in each of the Series that are no longer recognized when I attempt to replay them, and I would like the series' whole again if possible. Thanks, my friend

you can get cd/dvd polishers that will grind/polish the scratches off the plastic ,,,, video rental stores have them for their dvds .

some times you can get them to clean a disk for you.

sounds strange but I have done this with a little peanut butter and a paper towel and a hole lot of rubbing before .

the data on a plastic disk is a few mil under the surface and the scratches diffuse the lazier light

My disks may be otherwise defective. I have been very careful and they do not appear to have any scratches or finger prints. Occasionally when removing the DVDs from their case, a little smudge appears on the very edge of the disk, but I have removed it from the surface using my eyeglass cloth, and you can't see evidence of the smudge or any damage at all. One time one of them opened with an error message that stated the regeon was wrong, but it hasn't happened again. I didn't copy the error message, so I can't repeat it accurately, but I think it was referring to the code for the US as opposed to some other area of the world. I purchased from MGM Studios and have never been really satisfied. The first problem did not reveal itself until many months after purchase. There are a couple hundred episodes, so you can't reasonably view them all in a short enough time to complain, when the problems don't occur right away.

I hope to salvage my disks by using Handbrake (if I can ever get the Kubuntu version to work properly). I will copy to USB. No way to scratch the surface of a thumb drive.

Do you still think I should polish a perfectly clean disk?

It is almost embarrassing how much I enjoy what I think is good quality Science Fiction being so old, but I do. The cost of the two series was quite a lot, so I know I am a real fan.

My experience with Handbrake is that the quality of copy is great using Kubuntu, but the work page doesn't seem to allow for copying multi-episodes in the Kubuntu version. The work page for Handbrake is much easier and comprehensive in the Windows version, but the quality of the copy is unusable. Hopefully someone will know how to copy additional episodes when using the Kubuntu version. (Both Video and sound are wonderful in the Kubuntu version.) Just wish I could copy the other episodes. Thanks for the input, friend.

will k3b not let you "copy" the disk to .ISO file ?

the copy will be a large file 4-8GB depending on how meney extras are on the disk .

then VLC will play the .ISO as if it was the plastic disk .

I am not sure what I did, just fiddling with settings I really did not understand, but it is working, no it is smoking and I don't know why exactly. Thanks for all the help.
