Ace write-up, but you missed how you changed the default theme/style to dark...

I actually think the default Plasma desktop is very attractive and generally usable once you know a couple of things - see I find it hard to move away from Windows where I just hit one key and start typing (couldn't resist)

And, for me, after spending hours mucking about with the desktop I finally can't put off working any longer and I open an application it's all ugly again:
