QuickLaunch and Cog Icon

I am using Quicklaunch to launch Yahoo Mail onto one of my desktops.

Can I change the cog icon to another that is more meaningful. it looks like I can't.

At here:

1) Making a desktop entry with the KDE Menu editor



2) Editing the desktop entry with the Quicklaunch 'Edit Launcher' action



(of course the menu entry can be edited with the KDE menu editor)

I think that I can now change the icon using Quicklaunch edit.

Out of interest, how can I view the listed icons and determine their dimensions etc?

Where did you get the KDE Menu Editor from - I don't think it is the Muon repository (Packages)? I don't think it is the same as Menu Editor in Muon (System & Settings).

Rights to edit ?

IF the Quicklaunch 'Edit Launcher' has no right to edit then it will show the cog as the icon.



In this case the desktop file is owned by the root and other has no rights...

In my case the file is owned by me.

Out of interest, if it were owned by root, could I change the icon by logging in as root. I am not sure how I would do this

The Linux is using the freedesktop icon specification:

... an icon theme is just a mapping. Given a set of directories to look for icons in and a theme name it maps from icon name and nominal icon size to an icon filename...

An icon file is an image that can be loaded and used as an icon. The supported image file formats are PNG, XPM and SVG. PNG is the recommended bitmap format, and SVG is for vectorized icons. XPM is supported due to backwards compability reasons, and it is not recommended that new themes use XPM files. Support for SVGs is optional...

Icons and themes are looked for in a set of directories. By default, apps should look in $HOME/.icons (for backwards compatibility), in $XDG_DATA_DIRS/icons and in /usr/share/pixmaps (in that order)...

By default, the Root account password is locked in Ubuntu. This means that you cannot login as Root directly or use the su command to become the Root user. However, since the Root account physically exists it is still possible to run programs with root-level privileges...

If you really want to - you could enable the Root account but the idea of the Ubuntu is use the sudo/kdesudo...
