To manually mount it, do this:

    sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media

Once you've mounted it this way, it should show up in Dolphin immediately under /media. Try a file transfer and see if it's faster. You can see what mount options are set by typing:

    mount |grep sdb

To test the cable, just find another one and swap it.

    to manually unmount:

    sudo umount /dev/sdb1

it might have a different device name now. Do

            dmesg

and see what it lists as the last device connected.

OK, there's your problem. It still could be the cable or the port. I'd backup anything you don't want to lose ASAP, then continue troubleshooting.

I don't have another cable as this is the only external drive I have with a removable cable the others are portable drive with cable non removable
I hope it's not my computer failing I'm gonna try hooking the external to my other computer with ubuntu 12.04 on it and see what happens.

I won't be able to comeback here until tomorrow sometime so I will hopefully will be able to tell you how things are going Thanks for helping me.

you might also look for a USB 3.0 port. Some USB 3.0 devices have issues when using a USB 2.0 port, usually related to amperage that USB 2.0 supplies being too low.

I hooked it up to my Ubuntu computer that only has 1 gb of ram but I am able to access folders and files it's still not behaving properly example: I copy a file and try to paste onto my my other hard drive and there is nothing to paste as paste is ghosted but ctrl v works just takes a bit to kick in,

I put a copy of my dmesg on pastebin as it it rather huge this is from my kubuntu install http://pastebin.com/m3ULjhP6
I can't be certain but I think there is more going on than I am able to decipher, I would like if someone could take a peek and let me know
what if anything could be my issue/issues

                      Thanks

I just wanted to let you know that I think the drive is toast pretty much I have 2 weeks left on my 2 year warranty but even so I doubt they will honor it as I have seen many complaints on Amazon that its impossible to get a hold of Seagate I havent tried so I wouldn't know.

But I went to their site and you can type in your product number and serial and this product is coming up null, not a big deal I will suffer the loss not happy but Im not returning it as it is with all my personal stuff still stuck on the hard drive so they can send me a replacement minus my files and chance someone getting a hold of all my files, I learned a valuable lesson to backup to data dvds as I was before I got this drive.

Thanks for trying to help me sort out what was going on. Im having one more issue though I created a /media/Seagate folder in terminal and now when I boot it wants to mount that and I don't know how to get rid of what I did the machine waits for me to input before it boots any idea Im sure its an easy fix just I don't want to create further havoc then I have already.

and one more thing my password to this site was on that drive I went in settings to change it but it wants my old password is there any way to fix this?

You should be able to open the case and remove the hard drive from it.
There is a chance the drive is ok but the cage is not.

Try another cage or maybe put it inside the pc.

Thanks I'm gonna order an new cable as it is no one I know has one to try and take steps from there, I tried it on a Windows machine and same thing I can't access it.
For the record I was able to contact Seagate over the phone they were very helpful as well so can't always believe what is read online and they also said to try a new cable
so I will have to wait until I get one I will report back with any news, in the mean time I have tucked the drive away in a secure place my sock drawer lol.
