How do I remove the images from my desktop?

Kubuntu 14.04 installed yesterday. I want to remove the images circled in Red in the below image.

Normally the graphics on the panel on the top of the screen are hidden, however to show you what I see when visible, I fixed the default panel On Screen for the screen print.

The 'Power Management Monitor' on the upper left corner of the left monitor disrupts view of the Kmenu Icon and any opened application that would show there. It is immovable and cannot be hidden. It is a wonderful widget, but an irritation in my case. Has anyone figured out a way to remove it?

Additionally, I do not use the 'New Activities' feature and do not want to have the 'Symantic' or 'Show Desktop' icons on the panel either. In the past, they could be removed by right-clicking the Icon and selecting Remove. That feature does not appear in this distrubution. How do I remove them? Thanks!

Have you tried unlocking widgets on the desktop first then trying delete/removal?

Have you tried clicking in the box enabling power management, maybe it would go away then?

Unlock widgets and then click on the Panel Tool Box icon that pops up on the edge of your panel. You can then hover over the items you want to delete and click the X in the dialog box that pops up.

Neither of those things worked, but thanks

To remove widgets on the Panel, click on the Cashew then move your mouse over the widget you want to remove. A tab will appear above it with its name, a wrench (to configure) and an X (to delete). Click on the X.

I am laughing constantly. Both you and Rod gave good advice that did not really work. In your case, no Panel Tool Box appeared, however, I was unable to move things around in new ways that I had never tried. I wish I could remember all the combinations; in any event I began obtaining the ability to remove what I wanted to remove and get things spaced the way I wanted them. Part of the changes involved trying to drad items from the panel to the desktop which kind of worked. When I dragged them to the desktop, no Icon appeared, however when I placed the cursor to the area where it should have been, I right-clicked on the empty space and the option to remove the invisible widget appeared. I selected remove and it was permanently gone. I really don't know if this will work for anyone else, because it took such a crazy combination of efforts to make it work, but in the end it worked, and that is what I wanted lol.

Additionally, and I have no idea why, which screen applications opened when I selected an application changed twice. Each time I set the correct desktop default location in System Settings. When I made that change, another of the panel modifications that had not previously worked started working. But when everything was done that made things appear as I wanted them, dev1 which should be my right monitor opens applications on the left monitor. This is wrong based upon how it has always worked before. Having dev0 as the left monitor when it appeared on the screen in System Settings was the way it was before; that now changed to being the right monitor. I finally got the desktop Icons where I want them and the applications opening in my monitor of choice. I don't think anyone could ever duplicate the process that ended up working; I know I couldn't. It was a matter of making adjustments until the acceptable result appeared. I am still chuckling about it, can't help it. A very funny task. Thanks for your contribution. Wouldn't have made it without you.

Well, it's good you got it the way you want. As to removing undesired widgets from the Panel. When you click on the Panel Cashew and hover your mouse over a widget icon, you don't see this:

Another wrinkle just appeared, I hope it doesn't become another problem. Anyway, I won't mention it here, because it would be off topic.

I had to laugh when I read your post. I am inclined to at least try the given advice precisely as given, and because you obviously have your panel on the bottom of the screen and I on the top, I thought it funny when you mentioned the choice would appear above the item you right-clicked. Of course because of the different location of my panel, it appears below.

In any event your instruction is how I have always removed the panel items that I did not want. Unfortunately on this installation of Kubuntu, a right-click on the item did not supply a "remove" option. I was stuck with the unwanted widgets on my panel until this comedy of errors repair (on my part I am sure) happened. In fact, when I right-click on a widget that is located on the panel, the Removal option still does not appear. The way it normally would appear as the choice, it now appears as "Panel Options" and when you put the cursor on Panel Options another window opens and what you still want is "Remove" the Icon is now, "Remove this Panel", which removes the entire panel. Something is still amiss, but I am accepting the repair, because it currently works for me.

Sometimes my computer has a mind of its own. Thanks for the advice, anyway. It would have worked for me on every other version and installation of Kubuntu I have had, just not this one.

I wonder if it is because I so highly configure my desktop for each installation. I change so many things to make my screen of choice that perhaps some of the choices I make affect other widgets as well, even thought each instruction has its own purpose for the widget I am working. I don't know, but working through the process is very fun to me, except when I cannot resolve an issue, like screens opening behind the existing screen, or using everyone's advice to regain sound and still failing.

This was an extremely fun post, because it involved so many unpredictable interm problems that finally provided the cure I wanted. Thanks for your part, my friend

Here is how it looks when it looks like I want on the left screen. On the right screen is how my panel looks when it drops down from being hidden.

After I posted this image, the annoying Power Management Monitor returned. What a bugger that one is.

You have to click on the Cashew icon that is at one end of the Panel. This opens the Panel for editing. In this state, when you hover over an icon, the 'pop-up' tab appears with the wrench and X as shown in my posted image. Clicking on the X removes the widget.

If you have hidden the Panel Cashew, then just right-click on the Panel and select Panel Options > Panel Settings. This will open the Panel for editing.

Ouch I don't know why, but I never notice that before. Thank you very much. It is kind of like fine print, in that it got lost to me, perhaps by all the other stuff showing, and my mental limitations, of course.

I did not mention part of my other solutions to get what I wanted, because I was finally able to get what I want, and I did not want to confuse others with what I think now an unnecessary workaround. I am pretty sure your advice will solve my problem the right way. I used spacers to locate the Icons the way I wanted them to appear. It was something I tried when working the removal problem.

The drawback to this configuration is that there is no open space between the icons for open apps to show. The apparent blank locations are really invisible spacers that hold the Icons in place where I want them.

It has become very handy to have the three 'Kmenu' Icons on each screen. You rarely have to move the mouse very far to reach one of them.

The potential glitch I mentioned in the first line of this reply is, when I minimize only one application, the 'screen edges' coupled with 'desktop effects' won't make a single minimized screen appear, only when there are 2 or more. Don't know if you would be interrested in that information, but my favorite way to view minimized applications is when by putting my cursor in a lower corner makes all minimized apps appear for my selection. (Remember my panel is on the top, so if you like the idea, you will have to set your screen edges to the upper corners, if not already used for another purpose.) Again, thanks for this reply, it will be very useful in my future.
