No. I removed it when I thought it died. I tried the replacement HDD. No joy.

Not assembled, but I believe it will work with a liveUSB or liveDVD. I have a liveUSB 3.0 with Kubuntu on it.

No, the printer doesn't work perhaps due to the failing HDD, I do not know. My desktop has 2 monitors, but only one has a proper cable for the laptop, if needed.

While awaiting further instructions, I will re-install the damaged HDD and see if booting to liveUSB will work.

I am not sure I understand. I put the defective hard drive back in the laptop. I used my liveUSB and entered using "Try Kubuntu", connected an ethernet cable so I have Internet to reply to you. And yes, I have the replacement ready to plug into the Laptop, but it contains information that is contained in the liveUSB. About 4GB of data. I connected the replacement drive using a USB cable and am ready to go.

I am sory to say ,,,,,I beleve all your data is gone.

if you look at your parted output you will see the 500GB drive the 1000GB drive and the USB all have the same start end and size and file system ............you dd ed the USB to both drives .

BUT even though all your data is gone ,,,,,,,you can put the new drive in the box use your gparted to repartition it and reinstall whatever you want clean .........sory I wish I would have seen this thread sooner .

dd (disk duplicator) vary early on (years ago) got the nick name "disk destroyer" because it is sutch a low level tool ,,,,,it copys bit for bit ,,,,partition table , file system data everything
over righting whatever is on the target no mater what,,,,, whitch means 1 rong assignment to target and you are F$%ked .
contrarily if done right .....you get an exact copy of the source.

Thanks for stepping in, my friend. It's OK, I am used to disappointment. I will get over this one too. The important stuff to me probably wouldn't interest anyone elso. Records of my artwork and pictures of my family and a few things I didn't want to lose. Anyway I am older than dirt and my remaining time to be disappointed isn't that long. Plus, as important as those things seem to me, I did not look at any of that stuff very often anymore. Also, I get to start over with a new slate of memories. As usual you are just plain terrific. The users of this forum are so fortunate that you are here.

The problem was not really solved, however due to mistakes all my HDD data was lost. I am re-installing the OS. Thanks for the attempted help. :)
