Automatic wifi Connection

When booting up, KUBUNTU used to connect automatically to my ISP. But, for some reason, it now connects to another (insecure) network. I disconnect, and then re-connect to my own ISP.

I do not know why this is occurring.

Can I ensure that I connect automatically to my own ISP?

do you have "automatically connect to this network when it is available" checked in the connection editors general tab ?

I seem to have it checked in two ISP's. For some reason the other ISP had the box ticked as well - not by me

I have unchecked the unwanted ISP and hope that this will solve the problem. It does occur above my ISP alphabetically. This may have accounted for the connection. Perhaps it it is a new connection.

I wonder how it became ticked - default?

good question ,,,,probably a default once it has been connected to ,,,,,,,this is a relatively new network connection manager .

FYI: ISP is "internet service provider" like comcast,verizon,bla,bla AP: is "acsess point" like a home network,,, what your connecting to

When I was travelling overseas, I encountered problems with connecting to the wrong network. I solved this problem by removing the unwanted connection listed in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections.

After removing the tick from the unwanated ISP, I connected to my ISP on boot-up.

I connect to a router (wireless), which connects me to the ISP.

No worries, when I saw your reply, I thought that you were satisfied with the approach you had taken. I prefer the approach that I use for cases where I had inadvertently connected to an ISP that I later found was the incorrect one. By deleting the entry in the /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ directory it is no longer listed as being a possible connection.

However, I am still a little confused as to how this works. If there are people in the vicinity connecting to their ISP's, then wffi users might well pick up their signals, and presumably these will then be listed in the available connections of the users.

I assume that if I clicked on one of these connections then the files would be made and stored in system-connections. Hence, deleting this file would delete the active connection, but if the person re-connected to their ISP, then I would again pick up on their connection.

Or, have I got this completely wrong.

you are connecting to your AP(wireless access point) this is a radio signal broadcast from your router or wireless enabled DSL modem that then routes you to your ISP's internet
anyone in range can see it (I hope you are using WPA2 encryption) if you are unencrypted anyone can connect to it.

you are a little confused hear as well .
anyone can see anyone’s wireless signal if in range and as I sead above , if it's not encrypted , connect to it.
if you are hard wired , no one can see or connect.
that dose NOT mean if you are hard wired to a wireless router no one can see it unless you turn off the wireless signal..... it will broadcast 24/7 whether you are connected or not.

if you click on the connection (and connect)the files are made and stored yes ,,,,,,,deleting the files will prevent you from auto connecting yes ......BUT the person dose not half to be connected for you to still see the wireless signal it is a radio broadcast that is always their a long as you are in rang or thay turn it off.
