You have to do it in an image manipulation program. I use Gimp. Then change your profile image by uploading the modified image.

You can customize your KFN settings by clicking on Profile and then on Customize my Profile.

I know, but I don't think that aspect of the profile can be customised.
I toook another look at this because I began do doubt my previous reply. I changed this setting on mine:
From the default value to #400040 and got a dark purple background in the box. So you can try that. It just won't have the gradient that's in the default vBulletin template, because the template uses an image file rather than a flat color specification. Or, like Showhow mentioned, you can create your own image file.
