    QuickLaunch

Am I right in thinking that Quicklaunch (widget) can only launch applications on the hard drive, and not websites. At least I can't seem to launch a website.

If you mean: Can the Quicklaunch plasma widget launch a browser with the arguments ?

Then the answer is yes. The Quicklaunch plasma widget can launch a browser with the url argument.

What a nice little video - if it is one. Makes the point well. and you took some trouble (much appreciated).

I have four desktops. I experimented having watched your video. I used Firefox and yahoo.com (Firefox www.yahoo.com) and used desktop 4. Yahoo.com appeared, but it appeared on desktop 1. How can I make the page appear on the same desktop as the launcher. In this case desktop four.

I also like your link to the other launchers and intend to have a good look at these programs.

      Best wishes.

      A.

Ps Out of interest, how did you make the little repeating video. Can I control the speed?

        Desktop

One way is to use the 'kstart'

        Code:
        :~$ kstart --help
Usage: kstart [Qt-options] [KDE-options] [options] command

Utility to launch applications with special window properties
such as iconified, maximized, a certain virtual desktop, a special decoration
        and so on...

        Arguments:
          command Command to execute

        ...
        Options:
        ...
--desktop <number> Desktop on which to make the window appear
        ...
I have not tried (devil is in the detail) but maybe something like:
        Code:
        kstart --desktop 4 Firefox www.yahoo.com

        Gif animation

Ps Out of interest, how did you make the little repeating video.
It is an animated gif: http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/animated_GIF.html

There are many ways to make an animated gif:
        - http://www.webupd8.org/2013/07/qgife...-supports.html

In this case I was using the KDE Image Menu (KIM4) to make it.

              Yes, that worked.

It does not seem to matter regarding case, my desktop 4 is Desktop 4.

What do the minus signs signify: --desktop, -new-window, and nothing before www.yahoo. What does & signify?

I assume that to start the launcher automatically, I should put the widget into startup (the cog icon name).

              Thank you for code

the dashes (minus signs) signify arguments for a commands (they are optional "settings" that affect the command being run in some way)

The arguments available for a particular comaand are detailed in the man page of a command ("man kstart", for example. when viewing man pages, pressing "q" will exit viewing)

                In the command in question,
"kstart --desktop 4" will tell kstart it should start the following application on desktop 4, and
"firefox -new-window" will tell firefox to start a new window

Not for kstart it won't, unfortunately, "No manual entry for kstart". I found the options for kstart by typing kstart --help, and for firefox by typing firefox --help. So a good way to get a list of command-line options is to try the --help or -h command line options.

Documentation on commands is a dog's breakfast in Gnu/Linux. There's man pages for some commands, there's manuals in "info" format for Gnu stuff, sometimes in KDE the KDE Help Center (Help in the K menu) is good, sometimes it's out of date or unhelpful. Google can work, but it doesn't for KDE's kstart because there's a Kerberos init programme called kstart.

But, don't worry, we're very helpful on this forum, if the answer to your question can be found with, for example, "man xyz", lots of us here don't mind having to tell someone that; IMO you've helped everyone by asking the question.

                      Thank you..

I will now see if I can view Yahoo mail automatically using kstart and launcher.

                      Best wishes.

                      UPDATE:

I can start Yakoo Mail, but arrive at the login page. I assume that this is the best that I can do. I can't login automatically, or can I?

                        kstart --desktop 4 firefox -new-window www.yahoo.com &

--desktop (desktop is a word, hence --)

The "*nix-convention" is to use "-" for short arguments and "--" for long arguments, but not all apps (including firefox) fully follow the convention.

Depends on the website, in your link you can use the url you get to when you have logged in if the site remembers your login credentials (like offers to save a cookie for logins, usually a "remember my login" or "keep me logged in" tickbox or something similar)
