    OK. I understand that it is desirable to use the wallet because of its strong encryption. But if I chose to disable it, I assume that I would not be locked out of sites, I would simply have to enter the passwords manually. Is this correct?

      Basically, yes. Of course some programs (like firefox) can store passwords internally without kwallet, programs that only use kwallet (like kmail) would still function, but you'd have to provide a password every time it's needed.
