What packages are necessary for a computer to have sound?

    Nor on my onboard sound card either. It is the reason I purchased the sound card. I thought perhaps my onboard sound became corrupted. This is a very frustrating problem. All the normal solutions do not work, and the problem persists even after a fresh install of the Operating System. When re-installing the OS doesn't work and when there is no apparent problem with my hardware, and when the other OS in my dual-boot system has sound working fine, suggesting that both sound cards and my hardware are fine, I am totally stumped Oh, and when I try to find driver problems, there are no options for a different driver that make any sense. The only drivers that show up are those for sound/video for my Radeon card, and I am currently using the (recommended) driver.

    It is starting to look supernatural, like demons in my system.

          Is there an option in the bios setting to disable onboard sound?

            I looked at every item three times and couldn't see anything that appeared to disable Onboard sound. I don't know why, but I am troubled. I have a poor memory, but something tells me that I disabled the onboard sound, even though I can't find it in the BIOS. I have been known to look straight at and not see things before, so perhaps I am overlooking something. I just don't know. My motherboard is a Sabertooth AMD, special for 8-core processors and extreme video and sound. 990FX as I recall. Can't find the box at the moment. If you need more MB info, I will find it somehow. Thanks for your thorough help, friend

              Have you tried playing with alsamixer settings as described in the following thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=915078. Play a music using smplayer while you toggling channels in alsamixer.

              If still no sound, you can try blacklist internal soundcard by running the following command:

              echo blacklist snd_emu10k1 | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
              and reboot to apply changes

                Still no sound. I am soooooooooooooo bumbed. Reinstalling didn't help, nor did anything anyone has suggested. I am so stumped, I don't know what to do. Thanks for trying.
