If you wish to remove the widget
    1. Unlock widgets
    2. Open the "panel edit bar" by clicking the "plasma" icon in the right side of the panel
    3. While the bar is open, hover over the activity manager widget to see a popup with "x" to remove (or right-click on the widget>remove)

      Thank you.

If I remove it and later decide to re-activate it, would this be possible, or is it gone forever?

If you want it back for any reason, you can just add the "activity manager" widget back to the panel.
