    Security/System Updates

I note that I have security update to install, and a recommended system update.

I know from my Windows experience that updates are designed to patch weaknesses found in the system. Is this the same in KUBUNTU? I wonder what is meant by security update. A system update sounds like a patch to improve functionality.

Do these updates include moves to later versions of KUBUNTU, for example from 14.04 (my version) to the next version (say .05).

They can be both. Most daily updates are either security updates or bug fixes. Updates to new versions of KDE come in bundles. Youll know when you get one of these because youll have 200 or so packages to update at once. New versions of Kubuntu (numbered like so: 13.04, 13.10, 14.04, 14.10 etc.) require a system upgrade rather than normal package updates. This is a bit more time consuming and has potential to break your system so be sure to backup your system before proceeding.

If you are on 14.04, you have the most recent version of Kubuntu so you are seeing either normal security updates or KDE upgrades. The next Kubuntu version will be released in October (10th month) , 2014 giving it the code 14.10. New versions of Ubuntu and Kubuntu come in April and October.

      Thank you.

      Just a clarification.

When you mention 'back up your system'. I assume that you mean my personal files. Fortunately, they are backed up.

      Best wishes,

Just out of interest, how are the developers selected?

I am sure that not just anyone can upload files to a server to be downloaded by the community.
