Server rejected my password on Firfox 29.0

Recently I have been able to use Kmail anymore. I installed Firefox and have used it successfully for a few months. My OS is Kubuntu 14.04; it is updated and upgraded and dpkg --configure -a.

I have been unable to find support for Thunderbird. Here is what I get as info for my TBird application:

Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server pop-server.woh.rr.com responded: please send PASS command

    Login Failed

    Login to server pop-server.woh.rr.com failed.

Password reset window did not open this time. When it happened before, I entered my password and retyped same, carefully. What do I do?

The solutions requested from my system, including changing my server.woh.rr.com password have been unsuccessful. I confirmed that CapsLock was not on.

    Thanks!

Unless I have misunderstood you, I think you have mixed up Firefox and Thunderbird in your question there.

Just to make sure I understand your question... You used to use Kmail, and had it connected to this mail server just fine, but now you can't (?) use kmail any more so you're trying Thunderbird, but the server won't accept your password?

No one but me is actually that dense. Thanks! I meant Thunderbird when I wrote Firfox. Only have 2 electrons in my brain; they both spin wildly, however, it is only when they make a random connection or glance off each other that I even have an idea. Actually getting them to see the difference between Firefox and Thunderbird is tooooo much to ask.

        OK, a few questions then...

Did you stop using kmail because it stopped working, or for some other reason?

I googled the server and it seems to be Time Warner Cable's mail server (I guess this is your ISP?), is this correct? Can you log in with that username and password here: https://pop-server.woh.rr.com/ ?

What was your specific problem with, sending or receiving email, or both?

What are the settings you are using to connect to this server (apart from your password obviously!) i.e. which ports for incoming and outgoing email?

I sent a message to myself to see the current problem.

I got a popup that requested my pop-server.woh.rr.com password. I filled it in and the following error appeared:

Failed to transport message. Failed to execute mailer program pop-server.woh.rr.com

I stopped using kmail because it stopped working.

          My ISP is Time Warner/RoadRunner.

I logged in as you recommended and got “Webmail”.

My problem is with receiving and sending emails.

          Account name: svollom@woh.rr.com
          Incoming mail server: pop-server.woh.rr.com
          Username: svollom@woh.rr.com
          Password: xxxxxxxx

          Advanced Tab:

          Encryption: x None
          Port: 110
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          smtp-server.woh.rr.com (Default) Sendmail

When I click on “Modify...”, I get a box with:

          Sendmail Location: smtp-server.woh.rr.com

It is different from usual. I cannot find port identity.

Thanks for that, I'll have a play around with it when I get home tonight.

The thing that jumps out is the "no encryption" part... seems unusual, and a lot of services are adding/requiring STARTTLS, so maybe the settings you used to use will no longer work and you need to enable encryption?

What do you mean "it is different from usual", has the domain name changed?

OK so at least we know your password still works, if it is accepted by webmail!

It might be worth trying to connect using these settings:

              http://www.timewarnercable.com/en/re...addresses.html

Just to see if it's a problem with a legacy server that is left over from an acquisition (I've heard of Time Warner but not RoadRunner, which makes me think TW must have bought RR? Or is RR a brand owned by TW?)

Also, I did a little rummaging:

              Code:
              feathers-mcgraw@Hobbs-T440s:~$ telnet pop-server.woh.rr.com 110
              Trying 107.14.166.41...
              Connected to cdptpa-woh-vip.email.rr.com.
              Escape character is '^]'.
              +OK InterMail POP3 server ready.
              ehlo samhobbs.co.uk
-ERR Invalid command; valid commands: USER, QUIT
              USER
-ERR a user name MUST be entered
              USER svollom
              +OK please send PASS command
              ^Cquit
              quit
              Connection closed by foreign host.
A rather graceless exit there, but hey ho. Not quite what I was expecting - I've tested IMAP and SMTP servers like this before but not POP servers!

              This is useful:

              http://www.nthelp.com/pop_commands.htm

              I also tried this:
              Code:
              feathers-mcgraw@Hobbs-T440s:~$ openssl s_client -connect pop-server.woh.rr.com:995 -quiet
              ^C
but nothing happened, i.e. your ISP doesn't offer an encrypted POP connection. Not cool. They don't even offer STARTTLS:

              Code:
              feathers-mcgraw@Hobbs-T440s:~$ telnet pop-server.woh.rr.com 110
              Trying 107.14.166.41...
              Connected to cdptpa-woh-vip.email.rr.com.
              Escape character is '^]'.
              +OK InterMail POP3 server ready.
              STARTTLS
-ERR Invalid command; valid commands: USER, QUIT
              QUIT
              +OK ? InterMail POP3 server signing off.
              Connection closed by foreign host.
Can you try logging in by typing the following commands from your machine?

              1:
              Code:
              telnet pop-server.woh.rr.com
              2:
              Code:
              user svollom
              3:
              Code:
              pass yourpassword
This should help us rule out a client specific problem. If you get some interesting output, paste it here but redact your password and any sensitive info.

This is the second issue with the application which seems to self correct. I must have received an update that I am unaware, because the problem has gone away. Thanks for the help to all.
