Is there a want list where a person can express a wish?

One of the problems us older folks have is reduced vision. Even with Glasses. Nonetheless, it sure would be nice if we could set default minimums on any application that appears onscreen. ( I think we should make that a new word.)

The trouble this makes for me is the fact that if Ctrl + does not work on part of a page or on a third party application, it is very hard to read, even when they have their own method of increasing font size. Perhaps it is because those of us who need the feature probably won't be around long enough to warrant the time to program the improvement. If so, let it go. I just think it would be terrific, if it is possible to do. Thats MHO

Desktop Zoom is already an effect and active by defalut.

Zoom in with Meta + = (next to backspace)
Zoom out with Meta + -
Reset Zoom with Meta + 0

you can not use the numpad buttons it has to be the ones in the number row of the keyboard and the meta key is usually your "windows" key on the keyboard.

Settings for this effect are in System Settings -> Desktop Effects-> All Effects -> Desktop Zoom (click the wrench for options)

well happy to show you all.. my only wish for that is that i could use the scroll wheel and meta but for some reason kde doesn't seam to allow mouse actions in global shortcuts. iirc this is addresseed in KF5.

I refuse to be overly embarrassed, even though once again I earned the feeling. A while back, someone advised using the Ctrl +or- to magnify the screen it works on most sites, but not on one of them. All the ads that surround the working surface increase and decrease, however the work surface stays about 7 pt.

Now my little stupid feeling is returning. Once I tried the Meta key (is that French or Spanish or something for Windows). 20 years it took for me to know that. Anyway, after I pressed the Meta Key and + twice, the area I mentioned increased bigger than I could have hoped for. I was laughing again for the joy that gave me. Nonetheless, it fixes with the mouse and nothing I have been able to do will release it. Wherever the mouse moves, the screen moves, left - right - up - down. I looked for something in the menu and tried Ctrl, Alt, - and the Meta key incase pressing it the second time would release connection to the mouse, but there it stays. I restarted and it stayed. I shut the system down for 20 seconds and restarted and it stayed. I am expecting you guys to having a chuckle, but how do I use that wonderful Meta key +/- and then get it to release from the mouse when I am satisfied with the size of the screen. It is interesting, because when I close application, the Desktop background still moves with the mouse. Never seen that before. Thanks! Your goony-bird with the broken wing.

I learn so much new stuff when I re-install an OS. Mostly it is fun.

I hate to admit it, but during this re-configuration, I have had to use my Windows 7 OS to solve Kubuntu problems. I can't remember thinking nice thoughts about Windows for a long time, but finally it hasn't made me angry for a change. None of the parts that run that part of my computer are showing any wear yet. Perhaps a little now.

I am going back to Kubuntu and look and the Desktop Effects screen and see what is there about Magnification. I do remember changing something a few days ago, but I don't remember what it was.

This is my second edit since your helpful instructions. I went into the "All Effects" area of System Settings and unchecked the Magnify the whole screen option. When I did this the screen immediately returned to its default size and the mouse released. So I found a way to release the mouse, but I really like the Meta +/- feature, and when I unchecked Magnify the entire window in All Effects, the Meta feature stopped working and the window no longer increases and decreases when using it. What am I missing now?

Also another strange thing happened. While the window was magnified the Menu on my Firefox browser disappeared and couldn't be restored. I had to use Icons on the right side of the screen to access the bookmark feature. Never the less, after I unchecked the Magnify entire screen option, the Menu returned to top left on the Firefox window. I prefer that, actually. It was working like Rekonq. Additilonlly when I depressed the Ctrl +/- to resize the window after unchecking the Magnify the entire screen option, it started to work again, just not in the area I needed increasing. Wow, this problem is becoming a book. Don't know how to add the info without the dialog.

The screen movement attached to the mouse is due to the zoom temporarily changing the viewport to a size larger than the actual dimensions of your screen. Presumably, one would zoom in to read fine print or identify something and then return to normal magnification. If you want your screen to always look like that, you'll likely be better off with another more permanent solution.

Fourth time back for edit. I returned to system settings to mess with the settings a bit to try to learn more. When I unchecked Magnify the entire screen I lost the Meta feature. When I re-engaged the Magnify the entire screen the Meta feature returned, but also the attaching of the mouse to the screen. As a result, when the portion of the screen is large enough to read well, whenever I move the mouse, the screen also moves. You can't move the mouse to access features of the enlarged area, because it is fixed to the screen. You can still move the background until the mouse is over something you might want to click as a link, but it is the reverse of normal. Normally you move the mouse on the screen when you locate things. With Meta included, you move the background until what you want is selected by the mouse. Pretty confusing and dizzying if you are trying to function with Meta engaged. Not possible for me, unless somehow I can use Meta to increase the screen size and retain the increased screen while disengaging the mouse. Is that fixable? Are you able to understand my ramblings? Thx for patience.

I just tried this out. At here: the desktop scrolls with mouse movement because - as I suspected - the zoom enlarges the desktop viewport. Thus, some of the desktop area is not visible unless you scroll to it. However, I had no trouble using the mouse - clicking and hover seemed to work normally.

It isn't a pretty look though. You'd be better off using a larger font setting.

There is no hotkey to do it but you can disable mouse tracking in the configuration for the effect. You can also move the viewport w/ meta+ Up, Down , Left , Right Or...
Set the mouse policy to "Push". its nice you can move around the viewport then push the zoom area with the mouse by pushing it with the cursor.

The settins are located in :
System Settings -> Desktop Effects -> All Effects -> Zoom (click the wrench by it.)

I don't know whether that is too much to ask. I hate to admit, but the site that I have been referring to is a Facebook Zynga poker site. I play it daily as recreation. It is the game portion that remains at an unreadable font size. It worked fine in the previous version of Kubuntu 13.10, but not in this one. Nothing changed between the two installations. Both contained the same hardware.

I can live without the change. Rekonq works fine for that application. One thing I did not mention was that this time, I installed from a USB3.0 thumb drive. The other time I installed from a liveDVD.

It was quite an experience too. Installation including updateing and installation of Kubuntu-restricted-extras took between 10 and 20 minutes. Unfortunately I did not time it, but I am pretty sure it was in that range. Amazing the new hardware. Restart to a working desktop took 10 seconds. I love speed, and things are getting almost instantaneous. This was the first time I checked the download while installing and other checkbox too, so that affected speed of installation I am sure. The reason for the range is I only vaguely remember the start time, remembering what I think was the start point, and the fact that installation and restart and update and dpkg and install of K-restr-xtras all went so fast, but 8 cores with 16gb of 1866 ddr5 ram and an SSD drive with USB3 for installation was the combination that ran the install.

Why 'hate to admit' that you enjoy a game on Facebook? Now that "I" know where you are experiencing the problem, I'll take a look on my laptop when I get home this evening, and see if I too have the same issue. If I don't, I might be able to shed some light on why you might be, and, maybe offer a solution.
