    Unable move desktop icons

    I am totally new to Linux. My Kubuntu 14.04 installation went easily enough (it replaces XP, no dual booting) but I have two small problems.

    1. I am unable to move the few desktop icons that I want, at all. They are scattered across the desktop wherever they came to rest when dragged there. I cannot get them to budge, no matter how I click the mouse.

    2. The printer is a Samsung ML1670 laser mono and I cannot find the driver for it. One recommendation was to use the ML1660 driver but this chooses not to work.

    Any guidance would be valued by this OAP. My wife will not be pleased if I do not get HER computer operating again.

    I have learnt the hard way that an orderly, uncluttered desktop best suits her.

    Should have added ancient Dell Optiplex, Pentium 4, 1,280 GiB, on board Intel 82865G Graphics.

      About your icons....check to make sure your desktop is unlocked. Right click anywhere on the desktop and click Unlock Widgets. Then you should be able to move things around again.

      Unfortunately I cant help you with printers....

        Regrettably whether it shows "Lock Widgets" or "Unlock Widgets" makes no difference - nor does rebooting.

          Just to make sure I get the situation:

          Are these icons in a folder view widget, or as individual icon widgets?

            When you hover your mouse over the icons, what happens? Do the icons work?

            What desktop layout are you using? Find out by unlocking your widgets, right clicking on the desktop, and going to Default Desktop Settings.

            Have you noticed any graphics lags on your system? Im not sure how well your onboard graphics chip is going to do with plasma effects. Open System Settings and go to Desktop Effects. In the Advanced tab, theres an option for Compositing Type. I doubt your chip can handle OpenGL 3.1 so try to setting it on another choice.

              If you want classic Windows desktop behievior right click on dektop>default setting and choose "Folder" under Layout.

              And I would disable desktop effects on that graphic card. It is just too weak.

              I have no experience with Samsung printers (and printers in general), but did you try to print something? Maybe default cups driver will be enough.

                I have come right with the icons / widgets. My ignorance. I did not realise that one had to drag the widget from the sidebar that pops up. Was used to placing the cursor over the icon itself and dragging. Have succeeded in installing Calibre and Skype, so now set up as needed.

                Only thing left now is the printer driver issue.

                  No need to opt for classic Windows - very happy with the standard Kubuntu and my wallpaper.

                  I tried the suggested ML1660 drivers and had my printer report a technical error - please use the proper driver.

                  Will leave it for a day or two before having a go again.

                      This page claims to have a Linux driver download for your printer.... http://www.samsung.com/sg/support/mo.../XSS-downloads

                      The file is a .tar.gz file, comparable to a .zip or .rar file. I don't dare try to explain how to run the installer, but at only just over 15 MB maybe someone else will volunteer to how to do that.

                        You beat me to that link, which may in the long run be the best solution. A secondary one would be this:

Oshun's link is how to add a repository that contains those Samsung drivers repackaged for use on debian/ubuntu systems using apt or your package manager.

                        While a huge majority of printers are supported out of the box, you have one that unfortunately isn't.

                          Tried the "bchemnet" fix but it ultimately was a step too far for me. I do not have the skills or knowledge and have too many other things that I would rather spend my time on.

                            I have the same issue on two different machines -- A Dell M6600 with nVidia card and 318 driver, and a Core-2 Duo with older nVidia card and Nouveau driver.

                            Application icons on the screen cannot be 'click and drag' moved, either with widgets locked or unlocked. Applications will launch from those icons.

                            Both machines are fully up to date as of today.

                            This has to be more than a video driver issue.

                            Suggestions?

                              OK, solved by reading the original poster's comments.

                              This is a new behavior in 14.04. Application icons will not move if, with widgets unlocked, you click on the ICON and try to move it. You must click on the MENU HANDLE to the right of the icon to resize, delete, move, or otherwise adjust the icon.
