I have never had these problems before.
I would appreciate any suggestions to fix them.

    1. Panel widget (icon) removal
The way to remove widgets from panel has changed in newer releases of KDE (presumably because it was rather easy to accidentally remove widgets from the panel).
To remove a widget (or an icon) from panel:
    1. check that widgets are unlocked
    2. Open the panel configuration bar by clicking the plasma icon on the panel
    3. While the panel bar is open, hover over the widget/icon, the popup should have an "X" icon for removal

    2. Notification icon
In the notification area settngs>Entries section, try changing "Notifications" visibility to "always visible"
