so what do you get when you run this now?
        Code:
        smbtree
I really can't tell if the issue is on the windows xp machine or on the Kubuntu side.
Do you have other windows computers on your network that can access the shares (printer and files) on your windows xp machine?

Sorry it took so long to answer. There is another Windows xp machine on the network, the wife's laptop. I just checked it and I can get to the other xp machine drives, and printer, also I can get to the shared file on the Kubuntu machine. I can't get anywhere from the Kubuntu side. When I first installed winbind, quite a while after samba, I was able to access every thing on the xp machine, but after I shut the machines off, at night, the next day I could not access anything.

This could be the important clue. Why did you need to install winbind?

At this point we won't change anything until we know why you needed winbind and see the output of the following.

            1. Why did you need to install winbind?

            2. Please past the output of the following for winbind here.
            Code:
            dpkg -l | grep winbind
            3. Please past the output of the following simulating the removal of winbind here.
            Code:
            sudo apt-get remove --simulate winbind
Please wrap code tag around the output for examples 2. and 3. above.
            This shows how.

I think you meant to type "response to a google". Were you having a issue at that time? If so, what was it? Did installing winbin4 resolve the issue?

The problem I had then is the same as know, no network from Kubuntu machine. As I said it worked immediatly after I installed windbind and quit after I shut the computer down for the night.

Your smb.conf is very short compared to mine. Did you modify your original smb.conf or did you get yours from somewhere? Do you have a backup of your original smb.conf?

I used this to set up my samba print and file server the first time. I adjusted to meet my owns needs on my network.

I'm successfully running a samba print and file server on older hardware with Kubuntu 12.04 LTS.

I need to buy some time. My wife is calling me to eat. I'll respond in a bit when I finish comparing the smb.conf files.

I have used your suggestion to do some of my smb.conf. It hasn't rained for a while so I need to see if I can get some grass cut. If I can I will take a couple hours. I'm leaving everything up and running. I'll be back. It looks like you live in Salem, Or, is that so. I live just south of that, in Albany, Or.
