System stop loading at the screen with the HDD symbol.

Hello,

i've been using kubuntu for a while because unity sucks i don't like the Ubuntu desktop, i was using my laptop and then it just shut down, when i plugged it to the AC it was booting fine, until the part where kubuntu shows the system symbols, when the HDD symbol is "loading" the screen just becomes black with a red "-" blinking in the top left corner.

I ran the computer in recovery mode and when it gave me the root shell i tried "startx" to see if it works, and when the HDD symbol is loading the screen comes back to the shell with "xinit: connection to X server lost"

is an old Notebook HP pavillion dv2000 64bits
Kubuntu 13.10
amd turion
2gb ram
150gb HDD

do you have your system set to log in automaticly ?

you should try deleting the file .Xauthority in your home directory,,,,,,,,the leading . makes it a hidden file

if this has no effect look to your grafics driver next.

Yes it log in automaticly.

I deleted ".Xauthority" in my home folder, same problem.

and about the drivers ... i boot kubuntu in live mode from an USB stick and the screen shows okay, so i doubt the drivers are wrong, since i have in the HDD the same drivers as in the USB stick.

find ~/ -user root -ls

and post what it turns up ,,,if anything.

eddit: you should be loged in as you to run this or chang the path "~/" to /home/you ,,,,,where "you" is your user name

then you have a serous problem ,,, if you ran it on your /home ,,,,,,,all files in your home directory should be owned by you not root

try a

chown -R you:you /home/you

where "you" is your user name

and be sure you ran the find comand on /home/you the ~/ symbol is a shortcut for /home but if your loged in as root it will be roots /home

it shows all files in the path you gave it that are owned by root,,,,,, if you wrer in a recovery console and as root then the ~/ would have showen roots /home not yours , ,,,,,, you would if runing as root half to use the full pathe .../home/you

chown -R me:me /home/me

if giving me a list of all my files, so i just ctr+c

find /home/me -user root -ls

gave me this lines:

/.directory
/.kde/share/apps/kate/metainfos
/.dbus
/.dbus/session-bus
/.dbus/session-bus/(long alphanumeric string)

and other things at the right of them

run it agin on .dbus like

chown -R you:you /home/you/.dbus

then reboot and see if you get in .

it says at the end of every line something about read-only filesystem, rebooted, still the same problem ... is there a way to just install Kubuntu again whitout deleting all of my apps and files?

are you doing all of this from recovery moad ,,,,,,,,if so you must remount the file system read write first

SO if you are doing this from recovery mode ,,,,,,reboot , chose recovery then root after you have a shell do

mount -o rw,remount /

then do all those other lines again on /home/you

Ok this time isn't giving me any error, i did "startx" (as root) and now is showing me this error:

xinit: connection to X server lost

waiting for xserver to shutdown (EE) server terminated sucessfully (0). closing log file.

Root cannot run startx. You should reboot now and see if you can log in normally and end up on the desktop.

Same as the start, when the HDD icon is "loading" i get a black screen, then a blinking red "-" in the top left corner.

I allso think you should look at disk usage now as well,,, if /home got full it could lock like this as well ,,,,,,,,,do you have separate / and /home partitions and a swap partition ?

the

df -h

will show the disk usage of "mounted" file systems ,,,,,,,,,

sudo parted -l

will show all disks and partitions whether mounted or not, with usage info as well
