    Major Roadblocks Installing Kubuntu 13.10

I'm a first-time Linux user and after going over several options with my friend, who's used many different Linux distros for many years now, we decided on this distro for my first one. I have an ASUS F75V laptop that came with 64-bit Windows 8 pre-installed, which has been updated to 8.1 and kept up-to-date since. I'm using a Kubuntu 13.10 LiveDVD burned using Windows Disc Image Burner, as suggested on the Ask Ubuntu community help pages.

To cut to the chase, we're having a lot of problems getting it to work. For starters, my wireless LAN appears to be hard blocked. The rfkill list indicated the problem was with the phy0 wireless LAN module, which I'm guessing is the physical card itself. The thing is I have no physical manual switch on the machine - I'm forced to use the keyboard shortcut Fn+F2. It isn't working at all in the live environment and neither my friend nor I are sure why. It works fine in Windows, but just doesn't work at all in the live environment. I did try installing Kubuntu anyway, but when the installer was asking about connections, the wireless card showed up in the connections list. I couldn't do anything with it, so I had to choose not to connect. Nevertheless, I needed the internet connection mostly to be able to grab gparted to repartition the data partition I never used. that was setup by the manufacturer, in order to install Kubuntu the way I wanted to: one Windows partition, one Kubuntu partition, the swap partition, and a shared data partition accessible by both operating systems.

There was a troubleshooting method I found through Google that required rebooting in order to work. Unfortunately, rebooting from the live environment resets any changes made in the first place, so that method was not going to work the way things were. We tried restarting the module instead of rebooting, but that didn't work either. We ended up deciding to go ahead and install Kubuntu normally using the larger data partition. Everything seemed to install just fine, but when I tried booting into Kubuntu, Grub was just a command line shell. No menus, no GUI, just a meager command line shell. I've tried reinstalling it, and I even burned a boot repair disc, but I wasn't seeing that pop up in my boot options and my friend wasn't sure what to do when it didn't.

We're both at a loss for solutions. I'm not sure what all information to provide in this first post, partially because I'm still really new, but also because I'm not sure which problem should be tackled first. I'll be more than happy to provide more information as requested since I'm looking forward to exploring Kubuntu and what it has to offer. Thank you in advance for any time and assistance with this matter.
