    Tar.bz2 files and a no-go deb

I want to install a couple of browsers. They are not in a repository but both have linux installs. One would be Firefox ESR since I don't like what Mozilla is doing with FX, and ESR only gets security updates. I also want to install Pale Moon - a FX clone. Both have tar.bz2 files.
I can extract but there is no readme or whatever in the file after extraction. Read about everything I could find and finally came up with the XPCOM error. I'm slightly confused about where these are being extracted - not sure how to get to the most common answer /usr/local/src.

The other file is SWIRON, the Iron browser. Clone of Chrome. That does have a deb format, sort of installs but won't run.
The icon goes in the menu, and isn't usable. When you install, there isn't much in the list of files installed. For some reason, when you check on the folders, some of the files are also tar.bz2 or tar.gz.

I'm annoyed with Mozilla and Google right now and won't use either on Windows. I am using Pale Moon and Iron. The other browsers in software are not very good. Opera isn't too useful with my banking apps,

I use SRWare Iron and have not had any issues installing or running it. It installs to /usr/share/iron/, the executable is iron, and there's no tarballs associated with it.

How exactly are you trying to install these? More detail about how you're going about installation attempts and the error messages might get you some answers. However, comments like "sort of installs but won't run" aren't really any help in trouble shooting.

Downloaded the Deb file from sourceforge?. Used both GDEBI and the built in DEB installer. Both put the icon in the main menu, but under the icon it does not say "internet browser". Click on the icon, and it does not run, yet Synaptic and Muon package managers say it's installed. I opened the files to look for any installation or read me, and opened all folders looking for one. When you use the installer, it does not seem to list all the components in the file. About 5 lines and then done. That will also have to wait until I get on the desktop.

If the browser will run on XP, then how different are system requirements? I have an AMD64 card.

I had this once with Stellarium - installed but would not run. That time it was the video card. I can't find any specs for system requirements the way Windows lists them. I've updated everything but FX as I want to get rid of it.

As for the files, I'd have to do a screen grab or look them up on the Linux desktop, but they were tar files. Snooping around was the only way I figured out a lot of Windows. I look and hit cancel or close.

Something must have changed. I installed Iron on 11.4 Ubuntu with no problem, and I can't seem to get an old version to upgrade from.

I had FX and TB ESR on the 11.4 also. What's XPCOM?

      Thanks

Try purging your srware iron deb and then downloading and installing from here:

        http://www.srware.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=7257

The comments with the icon may not be set with the installer. Just run kmenuedit and edit it yourself.

To test your current (or future) install of Iron, open a terminal and type:

        /usr/share/iron/iron

If this works but the icon doesn't - fix the menu entry. If this doesn't work - post the error messages.

Iron finally put a download link on their page.
          Read replies:

          http://www.srware.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=7257

          Did this:

          sudo ln -s /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libudev.so.0.13.0 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libudev.so.1

          Finally worked.

Also got the newest version of Pale Moon working, managed to get an icon on the desktop, but have forgotten how to get a link into the menu from a folder. Got a link to a simple step by step how-to?

Are the instructions that come with Gimp 2.8 (newest file) accurate? I don't like 2.6, and 2.8 isn't in Software Center. Gimp did come with an instruction file.

I do not personally use Kubuntu, but I'm the tech support for my daughter who does.
