    Installed Packages Aren't (Fixed)

    I tried installing keymapper a couple days ago and dekorator today. Both times I had the same problem, that is, even though synaptic says the programs are installed, I can't find them.

    When they didn't appear in the k-menu, I tried kbuildsycoca --noincrimental, and got...

    Warning: kbuildsycoca is unable to register with DCOP.
    kbuildsycoca running...
    kio (KSycoca): ERROR: No database available!
    kio (KSycoca): ERROR: No database available!

    So I did a reboot, and still no sign of DeKorator

    When I tried kdesu dekorator, just in case, I got...

    X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 168
      Major opcode:  148
      Minor opcode:  3
      Resource id:  0x0
    Failed to open device
    X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 168
      Major opcode:  148
      Minor opcode:  3
      Resource id:  0x0
    Failed to open device
    sh: dekorator: command not found

    Finally, I used find files/folders and searched my entire computer, and only found one dekorator folder, under usr/share/doc/. The folder contained one readme, one copyright, and one changelog, but nothing that helped.

    Anybody have any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Josh

    Read that how-to on my forums for getting rid of the Bad Device errors.

    Have you done something like: dpkg -l dekorator or whatever app you want to verify it's installed ? How did you install ? If you compiled it, it won't show up in the menus unless you add it manually yourself.

      I installed, and reinstalled, through synaptic, and when it didn't work, once through adept and once through apt, just for the hell of it.

      When I try dpkg -l dekorator I get...

      Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
      | Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
      |/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
      ||/ Name Version Description
      +++-==============-==============-============================================
      ii dekorator 0.2fix1-1 KDE theme manager

      I'm not sure what this means though. Is it not installed?

      If I can't get it working soon, I'll try the how-to you linked. I would prefer not to start writing to my xorg.conf file though, since whenever I do it usually results in an unstable system, and since I was only running from consule to try to confirm instalation.

      Thanks,
      Josh

        deKorator isn't exactly an application, it's a window decoration...you can use it by opening Systemsettings>Appearance>Window Decoration and choosing deKorator from the drop-down list

          Ugh. I feel like an idiot. Oh well, I'll forgive myself since I'm still a noob. Thanks for the help.
