    Kubuntu performance

    Hello, I been running linux for around a year and a half and am pretty much %100 linux now. My system I can boot win7, linux mint mate and Kde, Ubuntu and kubuntu. I wanted to try Kubuntu because I want to learn about the kde desktop. I downloaded and installed it on a 100 gb parition and had some fun with it. Even have world of tanks installed and running but my issue is it seems really slow. I put conky on it and it shows the CPU usage is a constant %50 to %65 with barely anythin running, like a firefox window and skype running. I will shut everything down and try to run world of tanks and my frame rate will drop to 5fps or lower and it will be glitchy. It runs perfect on Ubuntu and Linux mint. I kinda thought Kubuntu would be faster but so far its not for me but I am still a linux noob. Any suggestions on how to speed it up would be great.

    What hardware do you have? A quick way to see what is eating up your resources is the top command. Open a terminal and type top . The output should look like this:

      Good morning, I am running a pentium dual core ES300 @ 2.6 GHZ machine with 6 GB memory, and a NVIDIA GTX 650 Ti graphics card with I believe 2 GB on it.

            Looks like quite a few duplicate processes are running.

            Go into System Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Session Management and under On Login make sure that Start with an empty session is checked.
            Windows no longer obstructs my view.
            Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

              You've also got at least three nvidia-settings running.|

              BTW: When you post terminal output of that size, enclose the text in CODE tags (use the # button in the format bar) like whatthefunk did. Much easier to read that way.

                Thanks for all the help. I turned Conky off entirely and its faster than Mint is now. I also went to System Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Session Management and under On Login make sure that Start with an empty session is checked. and restarted. here is the top output now.

                with the multiple NVIDIA settings running do I need all them and can I shut down what I dont need. Its a fresh install a couple days old on a new partition. Once installed i updated the drivers and been using it like that ever since.

                    Are things running better now? Your output looks much more normal now.

                    Instead of using Conky, look into the multiple plasma widgets available for the KDE desktop. To add them, right-click on the desktop and click Unlock Widgets. Right-click again and click Add Widgets. A side-scrolling menu will come up where your panel is. Drag the widgets from the men to where ever you want. If you want more widgets, add the package plasma-widgets-addons.

                      IME, conky works great IF you have good clean code AND some CPU cycles to spare. I went through my conky phase and even did some cool lua stuff but with the last several Kubuntu releases, nothing really needs monitoring. It's getting boring around here actually...

                        Things are running great now and I appreciate the help. One of the things I love about Linux is how awesome the people are. Using Conky goes back to when I ran win7 and had to monitor CPU usage and memory trying to figure out why the computer always rans so bad. Once I went Linux I found out it was because of windows itself and been sold on Linux ever since.
