    Nvidia Driver Problem

Hi, I've been having some problems getting my Nvidia Driver installed and working. I'm having to use the proprietary one, because my card uses optimus and it doesn't play nicely.

    Here are my specs:
    • Dell XPS 15z
    • i5 64-bit
    • Nvidia 525m and Intel Integrated Graphics
    • 6 gigs of ram

I'm using kubuntu 13.10 as well.

Now, some more details. After enabling the Nvidia driver and restarting, the Additional Drivers window tells me that the driver is activated but not in use. After doing a little reading here on the forum, some people request the OpenGL information form KInfocenter. I am met with a prompt saying "Could not initialize OpenGL."

Now, I'm not exactly sure what I should do now to resolve the issue.

    Thanks for any help,
    blairjam

Your X server is trying to load both the nVidia binary driver and the open source Nouveau driver. They cannot co-exist. What's the output of
        Code:
        grep nouveau /etc/modprobe.d/*

Hm. I'm a little confused as to why X is trying to load both graphics drivers, even though the Nouveau kernel driver is blacklisted.

Do you have the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf? If so, paste its contents here and don't do anything else just yet.

            If you don't, please run
            Code:
            sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
Then reboot. Does the binary nVidia driver work now?

Ok, I couldn't find the xorg.conf, so I purged nouveau and did a reboot. Still getting the active but not in use message in the additional drivers screen. Also, it still can't initialize OpenGL.

Are you trying to use Bumblebee, too? Or do you want only the nVidia graphics to operate?

I've tried bumblebee before, however, it didn't seem to remedy my problems. I'd use anything if I can get it to work.

I don't think it's ready for prime time yet.

Let's simplify things. Boot into your computer's firmware and disable Optimus. Configure it to use only the nVidia graphics -- this might be labeled "discrete." Then boot the computer. Now X will see only one graphics adapter, and should figure out that it needs to load the nVidia GLX extensions.

Wow. My ThinkPad, also with a Tiano UEFI, has many more options. It is so frustrating that hardware manufacturers limit what people can do. Dell has always been bad in this regard.

I'm guessing now, but let's keep going. First, blacklist the Intel driver from the kernel:
                        Code:
                        echo "blacklist i915" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf >/dev/null
Now remove the Intel dirver for X:
                        Code:
                        sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-intel
Reboot once more. Now what's happening?

Oh crap. I forgot to have you rebuild your initramfs, a small file that loads the operating system. This is necessary when blacklisting certain modules like i915.

                              Code:
                              sudo update-initramfs -u
This may or may not fix the low-res issue. Let me know. I'd still like to see the Xorg log, too.
