13.10 doesn't recognise blank DVDs or CDs

I have recorded DVDs and CDs in the past, but I don't think I've done it since I upgraded to 13.10. I tried today, and it doesn't "see" the blank DVDs or CDs. It does, however, see and play previously recorded DVDs and CDs.

FWIW, I caught a brief glimpse of an error message once, when I was trying and re-trying with a blank DVD - something about "... can't mount this DVD..." or similar - I can't get it to display the message again.

Any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

What is the output if you start the CD/DVD burner (k3b ?) from the terminal (konsole) and insert the CD/DVD to the CD/DVD player ?

    At here:
    ~$ k3b
    ...
    low meaning noise:
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
    etc...
    rog132@fox6s:~$ MEDIA CHANGED in "/org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/sr0" ; size is: 2048
And the K3b > Device > Media Info is showing:

Hi, I get the same sort of screen as your 2nd screenshot. The title is "Empty DVD+R Medium" then it goes on to give details.

      Thanks

          Don't know.

DVDs are too expensive to sacrifice - I'll try it with a CD.

          Cheers

Well, the CD recorded perfectly, so I guess a DVD will as well.

I wanted to use the DVD for data backup - I can do that just as easily through K3B.

Thanks for the help - as always, it is appreciated.
