    Software update failing.

    Hi everyone.
I do believe this is my first thread here!

I've been using Kubuntu for a couple of years now, but I feel like a n00b and I suspect this is gonna be a n00b question, so here we go...

I've been experiencing problems with Kubuntu ever since the latest release.
On startup I get several messages saying "System Program Problem Deteced". Of the two options provided, I click Report on all of them until they stop appearing. It is often 5 or 6 dialogue boxes that appear.
After that, a couple or three more appear, which are Ubuntu in flavour. They get the same treatment, too.

I've tried to fix this in what is the usual way for me: run several System updates. Kubuntu has been so reliable at healing itself, I've grown quickly into this admittedly lazy habit

However, System Update itself has now stopped working.
I have run Muon updater, the System Update which appears in what I think of as the Systray (Apper updater?) and the terminal code 'sudo apt-get update'.
The errors returning indicate the apps are unable to connect to the server or to receive the repository.
eg. System Updates is saying "Could not download packages"
Terminal is giving dozens of lines such as "W: Failed to fetch http ://gb. archive. ubuntu. com/ubuntu/dists/natty-backports/multiverse/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 91. 189. 92. 202 80]" (link disabled by me due to forum limitations) and then finishes with "E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead."

Think I might have done something wrong involving ppa backports, but my knowledge lets me down at this point, due to my n00bery.

I am working on a Dell Latitude D520.
Any and all help most gratefully received!
    Thank you.

IMO, apt errors are easier traced from the console. Open a terminal and type

    sudo apt-get update

and then copy and paste the results to a post. Please enclose the pasted text using the "code" function (the Hash button in the formatting bar).

you may have multiple problems ,,,,,,,,the first to fix would be your source.list file ,,,,,,,as we see in the error above "natty"(11.04) is end of life ,,,,so the repo is not their any more ,,,,,,what ver of Kubuntu are you on ?
if you have been net upgrading perhaps some source.list entries were left at natty (but usualy thay are changed during the upgrade.

if you have been net upgrading perhaps some source.list entries were left at natty (but usualy thay are changed during the upgrade.

            Thanks, Vinny.
To my mind, this would seem logical and correct, absolutely.

In answer to your question, I am running the latest release version, 13.10, which I updated to a couple of days after it went live. I've been experiencing these problems ever since running that upgrade.

The first obvious thing is you have both natty and saucy repos enabled. You need to go through all the sources lists and remove all the natty repos.

                Splendid advice; thanks, oshunluvr!

I have removed Unsupported Updates and Unsupported Updates (Sorce Code) from the Other Software options in Software & Updates. I have since successfully run all update options and have a noticeably faster and smoother user experience as a result. Thanks again

                2 little questions remain...
                1) should I now disable the option "Canonical Partners", which says "Distribution: natty" in the source information?
                2) removing natty repos was the first obvious thing - do you have anything further in mind that you'd recommend?

Cheers for sharing your time and expertise,
                Brett.

It is the nature of package management that command line tools provide more flexible debugging. Let's take a look at the results of your work so far. Please open a console and run:
                  Code:
                  cat /etc/apt/sources.list
                  and
                  Code:
                  tail -v -n +1 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*
Paste the outputs of both commands in a reply here. Surround each one with [CODE] tags like you did before.

I 'think' that part, if not all, of your issue is that you have a mix of release names in your source.list file. I bolded in red the release name that is in conflict. You have other conflicts, but the entries they are in are commented so aren't being used. You also have conflicts in release names in the third-party repository lists. These also are commented, so aren't active. However, if you are running saucy, then every active entry in sources.list and the active entries in your third-party repository list files should reference saucy where natty or raring are cited. Those third-party repository list entries that do not reference a release code name do not need to be changed.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

This is why you're seeing the "Failed to fetch..." errors you report in post #5. If you take a look at the URL, you will note that natty-backports is no longer present. Natty went EOL (end-of-life) in October 2012. At some point after a release goes EOL, all the downloads for it are removed from normal locations.

Some PPAs aren't yet building for Saucy. Ideally, one should check each PPA to validate the most recent release it's building for. Sometimes, it's OK to be one release behind. For example, SFLphone, the SIP client I use, isn't building for Saucy. So I need to leave its PPA sources file set to Raring. Only a hand-edit will do this; the GUI tools won't. While the Raring build if SFLphone works fine in Saucy, there is no guarantee that all packages behave so nicely.
