Can't see folders and images in digital camers

    Kubuntu 13.10

When I connect my Canon Powershot A495, the Digital Camera section of System Settings (Kamera?) detects it. "Test" says OK, and it appears in Dolphin (as PTP Camera). But, when I open it, nothing! I know there are images in the camera - it works in W7.

Am I doing something stupid, or are Canon cameras unsuitable again? I know they've been troublesome in the past.

    Cheers

I've always used Canon cameras, but then again, I always take the SD card out and stick that in the computer...

Never thought of that. And it works.

      Thanks for that.

i have noticed that some cameras will not import unless you use digikam to import the files.

I would suspect that not every camera has been set up in the udev rules. If you really want the functionality of plug-n-play for the camera, I suspect you'd be able to write the rule to allow it.

            Bug ?

            The kubuntu-desktop: http://packages.ubuntu.com/saucy/kubuntu-desktop
            is using the kamera: http://packages.ubuntu.com/saucy/kamera
it is using the libgphoto2-6: http://packages.ubuntu.com/saucy/libgphoto2-6

The gphoto2 command-line frontend has a bug report: gphoto2 fails to recognize current Canon S100 with An error occurred in the io-library ('Bad parameters') - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...2/+bug/1245303

Do you get error messages ?

The problem with Digikam is that it has a long list of dependencies, which I am reluctant to install. If it was the only way, I'd have to do it, but there are other solutions.

              Thanks

Hmm. I would have thought that most/all Canon cameras had the same workings, so if one worked, all would work. It would seem not.

Anyway, I couldn't write a udev rule to save my life, so it's fortunate there are other ways to skin this cat.

                Thanks

I saw this post and as I'm a very active (hobby) photographer I decided to see what my Canon G12 would do.
Plugging it in will via the Notifier show the usual option of Dolphin plus Gwenview and Digikam.
Dolphin remained empty as did Gwenview so there is a problem, Digikam will show all pictures in the camera and the option to download them.

That's where I stopped because I hate Digikam's insistence to sort my pictures.

I've been using digital camera's since 1994 (Kodak DC10) and I've yet to see any benefit in using this or similar software, taking the card out is so much more controlled, easier, faster and it also saves battery power.
