Please help vvnnewbie lost in linux trying to get onto WEP connection.

    Hi

    I am having issues!
I have not been able to get onto the internet since I was last able to (!)
I have had a few different problems and potentially in through trying to self solve have made a real pigs ear of everything.....I did not put the kubuntu OS on my machine and am feeling helpless.

Today network management was disabled and I did this.......

    esj@vostro:~$ sudo su root
    [sudo] password for esj:
    root@vostro:/home/esj# systemct1 start NetworkManager
    systemct1: command not found
    root@vostro:/home/esj# systemct1 enable NetworkManager
    systemct1: command not found
    root@vostro:/home/esj# systemct1 start NetworkManager
    systemct1: command not found
    root@vostro:/home/esj# rm /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state
    root@vostro:/home/esj# ^C

network manager was enabled after reboot

it 'sees' the connection I am trying to connect to.....

but....it is a WEP connection (as says so in scan details of connection in the KDE Control module). It has a 'personal' password. Which I know is correct.

In KDE Control Module I assign Passphrase (although it is for 128 bit) and put in the correct password.

WEP Index is set as 1 (Default) and authentication as Shared Key (but only because I figured it is not 'open', the other option). IP Address is set as automatic (DCHP)

It goes to 'configuring interface' 'waiting for authorisation'

and comes up 'secrets for the connection'

where it defines the key type as HEX/Ascii key (64/128 bit) and gives an answer for the suggested key. WEP index at 1 and Authentication as shared key as previously. I have used the suggested and used the original password and get stuck here.

When I try and connect to an insecure wireless connection that is nearly as good as the one I am having issues with – the computer sees the connection but on 'setting network address' suddenly comes up as unavailable

I have previously been able to connect without issue to wireless connections but in iwconfig it says the following-

    esj@vostro:~$ iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.

    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    eth1 IEEE 802.11 Access Point: Not-Associated
    Link Quality:5 Signal level:0 Noise level:166
    Rx invalid nwid:0 invalid crypt:70 invalid misc:0

I am running the following (this is the info as requested by the read here before posting thread)

    Grub

    :~$ apt-cache show grub | grep ersion

I am very clueless as to the structure of this OS and therefore how to manipulate and play with it is it possible I need to rebuild repositories? I say that like I know what really to do but I dont - if I did I would probably have checked for something missing.

Thank you for your time reading this. Sorry if a little verbose and I really hope someone is generous enough with their time to help me...please

No need to use "sudo su root".

The command for the Network manager is
sudo service networkmanager start (or restart).

    esj@vostro:~$ iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.

    eth0 no wireless extensions.
is telling you that the two checkboxes in the Network Manager which enable wireless and eth0 are unchecked OR that the necessary kernel modules are not loaded, OR in the case of the wireless the hardware is turned off.

Also, eth1 without an eth0 connection is a configuration problem. Probably mis-assigned.

To find out what modules you are supposed to be running the output of "lspci" command is necessary.
