adept database locked?

I'm having some weird problems.

1. Adept reports the database is locked. No other packaging system is running.

2. I had a messed up upgrade about two weeks back. Now I cannot boot the primary OS. Fortunately I had, inadvertedly (I'm a novice remember) created some alternative options, at least they show up on GRUB. How can I correct this problem and is it related to number 1?

I am not an expert but you may have some broken or unconfigured packages from the earlier upgrade. If that is the case you can try opening a terminal an issuing the following commands:
sudo apt-get -f install

sudo dpkg --configure -a

okay, ido. what kind of voodoo did you just pull on my computer. Whatever it was it worked great.
