I do not personally use Kubuntu, but I'm the tech support for my daughter who does.

When you bought the computer, did it have Windows on it and, if so, do you still have a windows installation on it?

If so, what happens under Windows?

it came without an operating system, so I have no idea, but the keyboard did work for a while, and it did work in Ubuntu

            Okay......

To deal with one of your concerns - they have sold you a machine without an operating system on it. Whilst they probably won't be in a position to offer software support, I think it highly unlikely that they can say you have invalidated your warranty simply by installing Linux on it - in fact I imagine they rather expected you to do so! I recently did the very same thing with a zoostorm laptop and whilst they will fix any hardware problems, for software I'm on my own!

I agree with all the others here that have replied to your posts : I believe you have a hardware problem. Linux does not tend to blow up keyboards. Specifically, because part of the keyboard is working and the other isn't, and you have ruled out accidental damage, I am wondering whether the problem is actually that one of the connectors between keyboard and motherboard has come a bit loose, and some of the terminals are not therefore making proper contact.

If you take a look at the diagrams you will see there are 2 connection ribbons between the keyboard and motherboard. If one of them has come a bit loose that might create the problem you have got.

Now, the issue here is that you will be unable to find out whether that is the case without removing the keyboard. I have changed a couple of laptop keyboards in the past and it's pretty easy. However, I'm pretty certain that if you attempted to do that yourself, and it turned out to be something else that was wrong, you probably will invalidate your warranty by doing so, so I think you need an authorised person to look at it for you.

Sorry I can't be more help that that.

Thanks, I will try installing other distros, but if that fails then I will have to try to return the laptop. :/

I will tell you if it works in other distros. Im off to try it

I cant speak to your model, but IME most laptop keyboards are easily removed, often without tools. My wife's Acer had only a couple tabs that when pushed with my fingernails released the keyboard. Point being: it's possible being a new laptop - that the keyboard ribbon cable was poorly inserted or not locked into position. Your belief that the OS has something to do with it may have been false. Rather, you "jiggled" it and the ribbon cable pulled loose.

I suggest searching the internet for a how-to on removing the keyboard. Then check the connection - pull it free, wipe with cleaner or a very small amount of WD-40, re-insert the connector, verify a snug fit, and try again.

Don't mess about trying to fix it yourself. The machine is only 2 weeks old and will still be under warrenty. You have the right to return it to the supplier/shop where you bought and exchange it for a new one. Also don't let them fob you off by claiming that they will fix it. Demand a new one. It's your right as a consumer.

My keyboard stopped working I when I had 13.04, upgrading did not solve the issue.
Am I reading this good that, before 13.04, the keyboard was just working fine? If so, you could just downgrade to an older version. I myself had had an issue like this, and it had to do something with hardware support of the new version. (in my case) My old laptop was working out of the box with Ubuntu 9, but then when I upgraded, the keyboard was not working at all. So I did not upgrade. Later on I switched to Kubuntu and never had the issue again. So trying other distros, or even ditro versions could be a good idea.
