Why does my computer not suspend to RAM since installing a second hard drive?

After adding a second HDD my computer, running Kubuntu 13.04, no longer suspends to RAM. As soon as the machine powers down it starts right back up again! If I disconnect the second HDD suspend works again.

Here's the output of dmesg from the suspend to the unwanted resume:

The HDD was taken from a Windows computer that could suspend to RAM successfully.

Why does suspend to RAM no longer work when this drive is installed?

Just a big guess - but the hard drive has spin-down disabled or doesn't support it? Or you system isn't giving the signal for the drive to sleep, thus it wakes the system.

    Start with the output of:

    sudo sdparm -al /dev/sdb

FYI: posts like the above become quickly unreadable because cut n' paste doesn't preserve spacing. Next time, use the "CODE" formatting - the pound (hash if your British) sign button - and paste in between the tags. Makes it much easier to read.

Anyway - nothing there looks odd, try:

        sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdb

This is driving me crazy. I've taken out all drives and put in a drive I know can sleep with Windows and MacOS. It works two or three times after a clean install, but then just stops sleeping. Is there a bug in a kernel update that comes in after a reinstall? What further info can I post to help diagnose the problem?

I am not sure if it is a 13.04 issue or shared with 14.04, as I was sleeping my system (2 HDD's and 1 SSD) just fine since Kubuntu 14.04 was released (I fresh installed it); however, around early July 2014 I no longer can sleep my machine, it also is waking up. The only thing I did was a sudo apt-get update / sudo apt-get upgrade (I usually do it once a week or so). There was a HUGE upgrade (214+) to various things, and I'm thinking it must be something in there.

Since I have my system installed on the SSD booting is pretty fast, so I'm just shutting down now, but really miss sleeping my computer.

I have given up trying to get it working. 13.10 didn't work either (same problem as 13.04) and 14.04 suspends and hibernates fine, but wake/resume doesn't work.

Just another thing Linux can't do right.
