Ok, how do I stop X from starting at boot then, switching the runlevel in inittab just messed things up, kubuntu must handle that differently?

That's a how-to on my forums that I used/wrote. You can of course change the E17 stuff to whatever wm/de you choose to start.

Welcome to Kubuntu from a former Mandrake user. Indeed, Kubuntu, which is a Debian based distribution, does do things differently from Mandr(ake/iva). For one thing, the standard runlevel in Kubuntu is 2 not 5. That's why all the run levels from 2 to 5 look the same, and why changing something in rc5.d doesn't change the behavior of the system.

In order to start in a console, choose "start in console mode" from the menu drop down box at the kdm login screen. After you've done your thing in console mode, just type "startx" and you'll be back in the GUI.
