No sound out of HDMI

I'm aware that this is a common problem, but none of the solutions I have looked up seem to solve anything.

I have an Nvidia graphics card and there is no sound out of HDMI, curiously enough when I plugged in some USB speakers they would work but only when testing sound in Phonon. Applications were all mute. In Phonon's device preferences I had the HDMI controller set as preferred for everything.

I have tried all settings in Pulse and Phonon that I can think of. Please help me. I want to make Linux my new home.

You didn't mention which graphics driver you're using, and as I understand it HDMI sound requires that you use the proprietary Nvidia driver rather than the open-source Nouveau driver.

If you aren't sure which driver you're using, check the Additional Drivers program (K menu -> System -> Additional Drivers). If you don't see an entry for Nvidia graphics with a green dot beside it, then you are probably using the Nouveau driver.

I always have this problem. The only way I have found to fix it is to purge pulseaudio.

I did a


sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio
and
sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio

Still nothing. I also tried to install something called esound but now I can't even find it or remove it.

Look for esound in muon package manager and purge that. Did you try every channel in Phonon settings? Mine works on hw1:7. Check your Phonon backend too....Gstreamer is default but sometimes VLC works better. You have to install the package phonon-backend-vlc first and then log out to get setting to apply after selecting it in Phonon settings.
You could try to reinstall pulseaudio, sometimes that works.
I wish I could give you a precise set of instructions, but Ive never found a sure fire way to get it working. Every install is different, even on the same hardware. I usually get it working but screwing around with it until it works....

A reminder for anyone cruising this thread with a similar problem, just because your computer has an interface which SHOULD pass audio along (such as HDMI or Display Port) does not mean it WILL.

For some reason some manufacturers don't include the audio signal, even though the connection can handle it.

Is the Motherboard s/pdif - OUT connected to the Graphics card s/pdif - IN? Also try the phonon settings in the attached image.

As for what dave2001 said, I know for a fact my HDMI does sound. It works perfectly in regular Ubuntu and Windows.

Also I cannot find "esound" in Ubuntu Software Center or Muon. The phonon-backend-vlc also did not work, in fact my computer no longer thinks there is an HDMI port when I have that set on default.

I've had this issue but I'm not certain that it is the same problem. What I've found easiest have been to install the veromix plasmoid and control sound output from that.

sudo apt-get install plasma-widget-veromix

You can add it to systray and all sound applications should show and I can switch between analog and HDMI sound on specific apps, by clicking the arrow/triangle. ( use it on my laptop - spec in sign)
