    Nvidia X Server Settings problem

    Using kubuntu 12.10 - NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-310.40
Set etc/X11/xconfig.conf.backup file permissions to rwxrwxrwx.
Set etc/X11 file permissions to rwxrwxrwx.
Set etc file permissions to rwxrwxrwx.
    kubuntu 12.10 – Nvidia X Server Settings – > X Server Display Configuration --> (Twinview)
After making changes, unable to save to X Configuration File (Unable to remove old X config backup file 'etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup').
    Closed Nvidia X Server Settings.
    Deleted xconfig.conf.backup
Re opened Nvidia X Server Settings – made same changes
Repeated above procedure – Error Unable to create new Xconfig backup file 'etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'.

Would appreciate any constructive suggestions in solving this delema!!!

Did you try using nvidia-settings as root?

    kdesudo nvidia-settings

      Code:
      bumpy@bumpyputer:~$ sudo kdesudo nvidia-settings
      [sudo] password for bumpy:
Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-bumpy" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
The program 'nvidia-settings' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
        (Details: serial 699 error_code 2 request_code 154 minor_code 25)
        (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
      bumpy@bumpyputer:~$ sudo kdesudo nvidia-settings --sync
Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-bumpy" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.

      bumpy@bumpyputer:~$
Saving to xorg.conf closed Nvidia X Server Settings closed – but file was not saved.

not sudo kdesudo, just kdesudo. kdesudo is the GUI version of sudo.

        Anyway:
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
You might want to re-install your drivers and nvidia-settings.

Have you tried saving the new file in your home instead of the default location? If you're having this much trouble with nvidia-settings, why not just edit the xorg.conf file directly?

I'm at work at the moment, but I'll post mine later on. In the mean time, what exactly are you trying to accomplish? Just twinview, or something more?

I have dual montiors, twinview, 100dpi and a few performance settings in mine. Give me a couple hours.

Don't know where the "GeForce 8800 GT" came from!! Am using latest NVIDIA GTX 550 Ti. Have dual monitors,ASUS (Ancor Communications Inc) MS238 1920x1080, LG Electronics L1751S 1024x768. Want to use Xinerama. When trying to save the config file, get meessage “Unable to remove old X config backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'.” I HAVE ALREADY SET xorg.conf & xorg.conf.backup PERMISSIONS TO rwxrwxrwx!
                Look forward to your reply.

Do you have the "Additional Drivers" application in your Kmenu>Applications>System>(In my computer the first item on this screen is "Additional Drivers". If you have that application in your system, click on it. It will give you the recommended drivers for your video card. It didn't sound to me like you even tried to upgrade your drivers. Since Kubuntu developers do this for you, you get better results using what they recommend. After you have updated your drivers, then open "NVidia X Server Settings". It may solve your problem. I have been using a similar graphics card for years and it works fine with dual monitors. Mine are not even the same size. One is 22" the other is 27".

I am building a new computer right now and having installation problems myself, but I changed from GForce to AMD. Ubuntu does not provide the same help application for my new video card. Hope this helps you.

By the way, I tried Xinerama and had bad luck. I think it basically wants to show both monitors as a single screen. When I was trying to use it, it made images that were squat in height and stretched in width. It was terrible.

I prefer twinview when using a GForce vid card, then I can be working on separate monitors at the same time. I can watch a movie on one while working on the other without any problems. Unless you are attempting to make a super wide movie application, I don't think you want Xinerama at all. Good Luck.
