Okay. Try this:
If you are offered a choice between lightdm or kdm as the default, choose kdm.

It didn't. And an attempt to reboot revealed that it didn't fix the problem either.
Something occurred to me. Is there any significance to the fact that at least half the time, it boots up with an ANSI version of the splash screen instead of the graphical one, with no apparent pattern?Comment
