Hi
There is not a hardware forum per-se, so I'm posting this here.
I quite realize that to the cognoscenti, I'm not all that "with it" it since I'm "just a hardware and software kinda guy".
But sometimes, "check the cables first" really IS the correct procedure.
I'm going to get an upgraded smartphone from my Android Galexy S and wanted to offload all of the photo files, etc. to minimize wait time at the phone store.
I've done this before Kubuntu works fine.
However, this time it did not.
Instead of immediately spending a lot of time checking drivers etc. etc. I checked the USB/mini - cable / tether.
I was using an older "dumb" tether which only moves "power".
I got another cable, this one particularly, is labled "U4" and will both recharge the battery and transfer files.
The older cable is "even" in width and "even" in thickness at the mini plug end; while the smart cable is "flat on one side and curved on the other" at the mini plug end.
Also the "length" of the plug is "even" on the older cable and the "corner" of the cable end of the smart tether, the end away from the plug itself, is chopped off diagonally.
So.... first.....check the hardware.....
