.dat doesn't really mean much. Try typing:

    file filename.dat

in a konsole window to see if the 'file' utility can work out what sort of file it really is.

        Hi,
I'm assuming here that the disc you are trying to play is an VCD if it is the dat file is an mpeg with an illegal header ie it does not conform to the specification for an mpeg file normally in the case of VCD it uses a 44.1khz sample rate audio not 48khz. does the disc play in a software DVD player in windoz. Have you tried playing it in Kaffeine as I have found that this plays SVCD,s ok. Have you installed non-free codex? this may solve your problem I cannot be sure as I have no VCD,s to hand only SVCD,s.

Hope this is of some help John
