Kubuntu 12.10 Does not start on AMD64

    Hi

I can not make Kubuntu 12.10 Desktop run on my new PC. This is what I did so far.

I have installed Kubuntu 12.10 Desktop on USB stick using the Universal USB installer under windows 8.

    Now I have the following

    1. As far as I can check the 12.10 is running OK off the USB stick
    2. I installed the 12.10 from within the image running off the USB stick.
    3. Installation done installing the latest updates and so on.
    4. Installation finished with OK message
    5. I then restart the PC and I see the choice between Windows 8 and Ubuntu (why does it not indicate Kubuntu ??)
    6. Selecting ubuntu an error message is displayed with the following info>

    Windows Boot Loader
    File \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr
    Status 0xC000007B
Impossible to load application or operating system. Required file missing or corrupted
    *message translated from italian....

In the lower part of this error screen there are two options
    1. ENTER to select operating system which brings me back to point 5 above.
    2. ESC to enter PC and BIOS setting part

    Details of my PC

HP Pavilion g6 Product nr C3N04EA#ABZ
    CPU AMD A6 4400M 2700 MHz
    Graphics Radeon HD Graphics
    Memory DIMM1 2GB DIMM2 4 GB

    Please also note>
    Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop runs ok
Rebooting PC from USB with Kubuntu 12.04.2 LTS leads to crash *text screen with long series of error messages

    What could be the problem?
Or what can I do to troubleshoot?

    Thanks
    Fred

Does your computer have a BIOS emulation mode?

If the PC would have a BIOS emulator then how can I know and how should I activate/start that?
Could I use the windows 8 system settings instead?

      Thanks

When you boot your computer try pressing F2 or Escape. It will bring up a sort of config page. Just switch to BIOS emulation. To be honest, BIOS emulation won't affect your computer using experience at all. The current setup was designed by MSFT to make it near impossible to run alternative OSs. Its possible to install on UEFi systems with secure boot enabled but its very difficult, toggle BIOS emulation in the UEFI menu will be so much easier..

I should have resolved the boot issue: Pressing ESC during power-up opens the UEFI/Boot menu. I disabled Secure boot as I read somewhere.

          Still not booting.

Then I changed the boot sequence placing Ubuntu in the first position.

Then powering up the PC Kubuntu starts.

I hope that this is a "regular" way of solving the issue.

Thanks for putting me on the right track towards boot/UEFI page!!!

          Regards
          Fred
