USB headset, sound, and crashing

So right now if I have my usb wireless headset in, everything works fine, sound output automatically switches to the headset. However if i remove usb dongle, while a program is playing sound, or potentially using sound (like skype), rather than seamlessly switching to the laptop speakers output, kubuntu 12.04 completely crashes, a black screen of death. Is there anyway I can fix this problem?

I have the same problem with a USB joystick. Without researching it - I suspect the problem lies in the device definition. In my case, killing the joystick by removing the module allows me to unplug it.

Likely a udev rule properly written would fix it, but you'd have to research it.
