    Hi Steve,

Point noted on how to do display the command outputs in code tags ( I learned something new today)

I'm using my wife's Acer netbook running Ubuntu 12.04LTS as a second machine for my email correspondences.

I do not know how to how to use command line tools to transfer the syslog file from the broken computer to the working computer but I'm willing to learn this new skill

    From,
    Jude

      Hi Steve,

Do you want me to provide you the syslog info first before I make the changes to GRUB or should I work on the GRUB first?

Uh, I just noticed in your original post you mentioned GRUB 0.97-29ubuntu66. That's the old GRUB Legacy, which uses a completely different configuration file format than what would make sense for the bit I posted earlier. I missed that before and assumed you were running GRUB 2. My GRUB 2 skills are somewhat rusty, as I no longer use that boot manager; I know next to nothing about GRUB Legacy.

Photograph your monitor while performing the command in post #11 and let me take a look.

Whew! You've got GRUB 2. Cool. Go ahead and follow step #15 for now, let's see what kind of error messages we can tease out.

                Hi Steve,

As suggested, I carried out the tasks in Item #15.

After point 3 where I click CTRL+X to save, it prompts me the following:

                Code:
                File Name to Write: /etc/default/grub
                What should I type?

                Thanks.

Nano is prompting you for the file name that you want to save as, and it helpfully fills in the existing name as the default. Just press Enter to accept that.

                      Thanks Steve,

When I pressed <Enter>, the following message appeared:

                      Code:
Error writing /etc/default/grub: Read-only file system
                      Please advise

                      Thanks.

Hey, I just noticed you're in Malaysia. Where? I've been to Kuala Lumpur many times -- love the place. Once rented a car and drove to Genting Highlands. Very weird, driving on the left side of the road

Did you boot into recovery mode?

                          Did you run

                          mount -o remount,rw /

I'm in a town about 60mins drive south from Kuala Lumpur - it's called Seremban...

Yeah, Genting is a nice highland resort - a little commercialized but still lots of fun

My wife visited Chicago late last year & were amazed by the windy-city. They don't call it that for no reason... and driving on the right lane there was a strange experience, indeed...

Yes, I did boot in recovery mode.

I exited nano without saving changes & ran that mount command again. There is no output message.

When I worked for Microsoft, I traveled to southeast Asia frequently, about one week each month. Used Singapore a base and got to know the island really well. From there I'd venture into KL, Bangkok, Jakarta, Manilla, Saigon, Hanoi, Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong. So much fun.
