    Ati and X.Org

    Hello there Quantals.

I don't want to describe how much pleased I am as I finally found long-term substitue for win7 and upcoming metro-bloatware-5hit versions 8, 9, 10.. and so on. Those M$ versions will never find their place on my hard drive, just because of this cute candy and extremely powerful penguin. Finally, a distro that can handle all my hardware, dual view displays (portrait + landscape) fonts, everything.. looks and works like I am dreaming. KDE4 - Both mom and dad for any other graphical environment. Everyone should be aware of that D: D:

Now, to get to the point.

As I have wrote, I have everything, working bullet fast and responsive. There is only one more thing left to determine (or to leave as it is, don't know for sure).

The subject is : RV730 PRO [Radeon HD 4650]

And the drivers as stands below (from kinfo center)

    Vendor >> X.Org
    Renderer >> Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV730
    OpenGL/ES version >> 2.1 Mesa 9.0
    Kernel module >> radeon

What I would like to know is should I look and search for better (don't know if these are ok/not, I would say according to my experience so far, that nothing is wrong with these either) drivers or just sit back, relax and continue working?

Few minutes a go, I have tried to install from ati @.run package, but, everything, normally failed (the same scenario with Slack).
I have lost dual setup, monitor info, resolutions .. everything, after reboot. So, I reverted back to these, and everything is quite ok once again, as it was, within a minute.

Should I keep these default Kubuntu-setup drivers or I should upgrade?
I am kinda confused with the "choices" that we all have.
Flash, videos.. all those screensavers are running quite smooth... without a glitch.. didn't tested any intensive 3D, etc.

    Thanks in advance.

    Ubuntu Community ATI/AMD documents:

    - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI

    From the AskUbuntu: http://askubuntu.com/questions/20987...50-catastrophe
Ati has removed support for Radeon 2xxx, 3xxx and 4xxx series of graphic cards for their newest drivers, which Ubuntu 12.10 now uses. You need to install AMD's legacy drivers to use these older cards...
"If it works don't break it": At here the Radeon HD 6850 with the opensource drivers - I have now and then tried the AMD fglrx drivers but always removed them.
    Have you tried ?

That's what I thought as well. So, even if I find better open source drivers than the ones that came with K*12.10 there won't be some benefit, right?
The situation is almost merely the same (at least for card type I have) within Windoze7. M$ drivers (automatic updates/action center) are working much better than those from ATi with cccc.

Thanks for the info and links.

Well - there is the bleeding edge: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers
Packages for those who think development versions, experimental and unstable are for old ladies. We want our crack straight from upstream git! Well, straight, we want it built and packaged so we don't need to know what we're doing, except that we will break our X and put our computers on fire...

        etc...
