Oops not sure if I should use Quick Reply or + Reply to Thread ...

Anyway, I'll go yes on that. Tablet. And give more info.

Re newbie (or is it newby? does it matter hehe) status, I've started following the link(s) from the "new
guys go here first" thread above. So I can minimally work konsole and understand the command line function. Similar to DOS and "run" in XP (msconfig, services.msc etc).

Re sound not working (I have updated specs for the sound chip and codec) I believe there are 5 apps involved, Amarok, Phenon, Pulse audio, Alsamixer, and Kmix. I believe there should be software for
the codec and a driver for the hardware. If the correct driver (Intel Corporation 82801FB FBM FR FW
      FRW IDE (ICH6) (Rev 0.3)) and codec (AD1986A (2CH))
are installed and correctly configured to the mixer (Alsamixer), then if all the other apps are
switched on/not muted, ... it should work (Damn -no fingers crossed smiley). All provided the hardware
is switched on/not US of course.

There looks to be no reference to sound in the Phoenix 20MA Bios. As the commands
      lspci -nn|egrep 'ultimedia|udio|sound|AC97|ac97|EMU' and cat /proc/asound/car*/co* | grep Codec
found the device name and codec I assume they are working thus far. I believe Kubuntu supports
the driver and codec though this is unconfirmed.

I have peered at and messed a bit with Alsamixer and hope not made things worse hehe.
Although obviously I might know what Amarok is about from using media players in XP - mostly
VLC (and limited Mac), maybe it needs configuring.

I have no idea what Phenon and Kmix do (yet) or why necessary/what benefits there might be.
Ditto Pulse audio or even how to access it although I picked up somewhere that it relies on a time
rather than interrupt request and can therefore cause problems.

I haven't considered Dragon Player or video yet.

Since the Celeron-M 900 is not the fastest tool in the shed, XP Tablet Edition users report
difficulties maintaining smooth DVD level performance on this, the Q1. It thus follows that
keeping running apps to a minimum looks a good idea. One of the advantages of Linux methinks.

I have been looking at this ...
      https://help.ubuntu.com/community/So...otingProcedure

Is this the way forward? Looks a bit intimidating to a newby/ie.

      Is there a short cut?

      Thanks for taking an interest

I have never installed on a tablet so I won't be much help there. But I would suggest you change the title to something like:
12.04 No Sound No Kmix (+No user interface features) Tablet Installation

This will make it easier for knowledgeable people to help.

To do this go to the very first post and do: edit then change your title.

I hope this is helpful and welcome to the party

Hi and thanks for your cheery welcome and advice which is gratefully
received and which I have done my best to follow.

Ok so it's a tablet in as much as it has a built in touch screen. Aside
from the fact that this is working perfectly under 12.04 (I even have the
stylus hehe), there is a proprietary keyboard with built in mouse
          controls attached.

Of the user interfaces that are additional to a lap/desktop note/netbook,
most I can live without or look unlikely to be supported, I don't have
much use for a joystick and have never used user define
(hot)keys/buttons, an auto scaler, or a quick menu button. The AVS
function is unlikely to be supported, if the associated phrase "windows
embedded" is as dire as it looks. SRS surround sound is another luxury.
          The enter button works.

No, it's just the basic sound that is really essential right now. With time
maybe my perfect installation goal can eventually be achieved.

Slax from flash drive gets the sound working straight away. (and everything else
important seemed to work). Perhaps other distros are better for sound than Kubuntu,
can anyone point me in the right direction please?
